996 Turbo as a daily drive??
Discussion
I'm sure some people on here have ran these as daily drives and am interested as to how they found it and what the financial reality was of running one of these on that basis?
Moved jobs last year so got rid of my 996 C2 for a company 535d Touring. The BMW is great now we have dogs and daughter but my wife loves it more than me and by and large with work I just dont need that big a car (and I sooo miss my Porsche!)
Always wanted a turbo and in a position now to have one (if I fob the 535 off to the wife) but doing circa 20,000 miles a year is it going to be impractical or too exorbitant to run??.
Any past experiences or feedback would be great.
I found it more reliable than my E39M5 and the 12k service interval meant cheap enough to service. Only problem is depreciation because car dealers have managed to make everyone paranoid if a 911 turbo has done more than 7kpa so when you sell it everyone will say at 30/40/50k it's too high mileage for the year.
Apart from that, totally superb daily driver.

50K not even run in

ditto the above
ive had my x50 for a few weeks now and my commute is from suffolk to bolton!!
i cant think of another car i would most want to to the journey in
yes high mileage can hit a car depreciation wise, but if you buy reasonably and keep it for a time then throw the miles on it. you certainly wont be disappointed from a performance point of view

I put over 30k on my old C4, the TT will get the same treatment, I can't think of another make that'll do what these cars do...

And the cockles of Gordon Browns heart too no doubt
How much fuel are you using a week WW ?:gulp:
im going for the 1st prize in the carbon footprint 2007 challenge
in fairness, i dont do the run each day, up monday back thursday, although I got 27mpg on the last run, until i met a fellow PH'er for a cuppa mid journey, spooled the turbos up and the consumption increased a little ......
Cheers guys, however, now got a small fly in the ointment.....
Just been out and test driven a turbo. Lovely motor, exactly the same as my old 996 obviously but, but.... steering a bit distant and (dare I say it) not as fast as i thought...!
Anyway, asked for a go in a 997 C4S demonstrator they had there and OMG! What a car, going to try out a C2S next week as I think it will be even better.
Am I right to be underwhelmed by the Turbo or is it possibly a "duff" one?? I think I need test a few more because at the moment I am definitely going down 997 S route..

turbos are as fast as you drive them
yes at slow speeds the front end does seem heavier, but the communication builds with the speed
before i bought mine i test drove a handful. some were great, others were mediocre.
when those turbo's are spooling in a well maintained car i really dont think a c2s will be better.
horses for courses though. if the 997 c2s/c4s flicks your switch then go for it!

To be honest, I'm feeling the same with the expectation of power, I'm hoping a zorst will make it a bit more eager...Must stop reading 6speedonline, mods will ruin me
This is my slant on things:
If you do high mileage then you're in the car rather a lot. Just as you spend a lot of time at home and therefore wouldn't choose a crappy house, so you should choose the car that you'll most enjoy all you precious time in!
Conversely, if you do little mileage then you don't get to use it very often so when you do you ALSO want something really nice!
You like my think ya ;-) ?! LOL!
