I'd be interested to hear from anyone who runs a GT3 RS a long term daily driver. Has it been a good ownership experience for you? I'd pretty much settled on a 360, and stuff the expense, but to abandon Porsche after many years of trouble free ownership seems so disloyal, do you know what i mean?? Basically i'm after a hard core drive, i'm never driving in heavy traffic and have no worries about where it gets parked. I doubt it would ever see a track though.
Your thoughts, opinions and suggestions for alternatives would be much appreciated (budget: £60-70k). Regarding the RS: what are the most desirable options come resale time?? Many thanks.

An RS is pretty hardcore for a daily drive. Much more so than a 360. You should really be comparing with a 360 CS although the only chap I met who had one sold it for an RS as the 360 was even more impractical, much more to run and no faster.

Take both out and I'm sure you'll know what you want. For me though, the RS really excels on the track. I'm happy with a 3 series on the road!

Hi..i have a 360 in the garage along with my GT3RS....let me tell you there is absolutely no comparison how they drive.....the 360 is a gem to drive but its a car what i feel needs wrapping in cotton wool and to be driven like a faggit....on the other hand the RS..well...its late on the brakes...boot to floor....burble into the rev limiter and enjoy the RS experience...the RS puts in my eyes the 360 to shame...build quality-driving experience-the 360 will never be a 911 !!!.

Hopefully looking at an RS this weekend, so we'll see. Comparison with a CS is a fair one obviously, but it falls outside the budget. Just finished a 2 day stint with a new Range Rover (long story), it's all very nice and well appointed but how do people put up with them, dull, dull, dull. I much prefer actually being involved in the experience, not just along for the ride. Hence the search for a harsher more uncompromising vehicle. . .

Nice comments from Yetie and Sambaman. I agree with you both. Performance cars should be driven. If you can't give it a spanking without worrying about it breaking then what's the point??? Looking forward to taking the RS out

I've run a 360 and currently run a 996RS. I can give you a bloody diatribe and I will because I'm bored!

Firstly the 360 is no ballerina.... In years to come people will recognise that it really isn't a particularly good drivers car and a pretty poor Ferrari.
Compared to the 996RS - as a drivers car - it's plain crap... it really is. To be honest the comparison is invalid. One is a proper out-n-out track car and the other is a cruiser (and yes I've picked my words carefully).

Ref the 360 - There is no real muscularity in the power delivery and even at 7000rpm plus when it should excel, it really doesn't pull very hard - by this time the 996RS has sped off into the distance LITERALLY. But you can live with that.. what you can't live with is the way it deals with corners. The front end has no real mechanical grip and the rear end is all over the place. The F1 gearbox equipped cars are made worse by the unpredictable way in which the clutch re-engages after the shifts and the ease with which you can confuse the 'box with your throttle inputs. The first gen Ferrari ECU controlled throttle action is inconsistent and spiky which doesn't help either (even if you get a manual). Worse still it's underbraked and high speed stability isn't up to much either.. If you insist on getting one FFS get the sport seats as you'll slide out of the cruiser-seats the first time you grow the nuts to corner hard!

All of this adds up to a car that isn't much good for anything but posing and something that will get annihilated by the 996RS (and a Mk2 GT3) in EVERY dynamic respect. If you like to drive you'll be bored of the 360 within a few weeks. It makes a gear noise (with tubi though) and looks great but you get over that quite quickly. BUT to be fair you can sort most of these issue out (IF you're a hardcore driver) with some cheap uspension work so it's not as if the car is FUNDAMENTALLY not capable - it' IS - I just got the overwhelming feeling that the 360 was setup/designed for the US market and Ferrari had softened it up and held it back.

The 360CS is a COMPLETELY different machine and almost every criticism I've levelled at the stock 360 is rectified in the Stradale. The only reasons I don't have one is because they are STILL slower than the 996RS, (round corners AND a straight lines - forget the crappy top gear test) and I just cant bear to buy a car that's slower than my previous one - AND it's not quite as engaging as the 996RS (involvment) and I can't find a yellow one.
To some extent the 996RS is even more extreme than the strad - it's a lot stiffer than the strad (strad has excellent adaptive damping which makes it more compliant), Porsche more dangerous (no TC etc), and requires quite a bit more skill (and a particular driving style) to deliver matching lap times... but ultimately this makes the Porsche that bit more satisfying to drive. On track there is no comparison.. set the geo up on the RS and bye bye Stradale (if the Ferrari hasn't blown up by then).

BUT....
I don't consider the 996RS a daily driver and I'm pretty hardcore. I suppose it can be done but eventually the ride, ride height and lack of touring ability may wear you down.

In your position I would stretch to the Strad which is just such a better car in almost every way and a more worthwile comparison to the 996RS.

Sorry for long post. Just my opinion.

Regards

Nik.
