On an '03 996, with CDR 23, how do you remove the headunit - ie pull it out of the dash? Are there special tools available?

TIA

Yes, you may find them on eBay (probably more chance looking for Becker ones than Porsche) otherwise Sempal or Putnoe Radio Service.

Either £1 each or £1 per pair, I forget - but you need two and I think they're handed.

Take the surround from round the air con unit; remove the four screws and lift the unit forward, then get your hand behind the radio and tease it out....

Both, one is easy (with tools) one is harder (taking surround off).

I've taken the surround off to fit my HK Ipod device. The option you choice I guess depends on why you are removing the unit. If it is to hook up an Ipod device like the HK as an example I would remove the surround. Easier to then plumb the wires in and hide away.
Best of luck, I am sure there is no wrong answer to your question.

Is that just a matter of levering it off? Isn't there a danger of breaking it?

And yes, this is to fir an Ipod kit...

Did mine with a screwdriver with the end covered over by a spectacle cleaning cloth which seemed to do it. Just take it easy and if the resistance feels too much try somewhere else. Also, I can't remember (it was 2 years ago!) but I think the screws behind it are torx screws so you'll possibly need torx bits for your screwdriver/socket set.
