Now that they have been out for over a couple of years I was wondering if there have been any reports of any engine failures (or serious problems) with any of the 997 and 987 variants of 911 and Boxster. I was lucky with my two Boxsters but have known a few come a cropper with their 996 3.4 units and 986 Boxster units.

I'm now looking at used 987s to buy (S variant) and was wondering if there were any potential horror stories.

Ran a 997 Carrera for April 05 to April 06 and then a 997 Carrera S since April 06.

Apart from fuel, insurance, one set of tyres and one service (20k) on the 997 Carrera S, both cars have cost me zero (yep, not a penny) to run. Only failure was the horn on the 997 Carrera S and a central locking malfunction but both sorted out for free under warranty.

Try getting that from a Ferrari...!

I'm now on my second 997S, a total of over 20k miles between the two. Again - horn needed looking at, floormats wore out very quickly and a side repeater fell out, all done under warranty.
Now I've written that, the RMS will fail on my way home tonight.

Why have you had so many identical cars in such a short space of time?

Had a 997 from Apr 05 to December 05
Sat nav & audio system failed to work a number of times, so they replaced the whole unit. In the process they ripped the leather on the hand brake and scratched the driver’s door side!!!!, they repaired this afterwards

Then the tip tronic failed me at the traffic lights, the auto was stuck in 4th gear, caused huge tail backs during the morning rush hour - great start!! problem with the software they told me

997 gt3 March 07 onwards - few squeaks from the drivers side door which can be annoying, but still on my honeymoon period, so not in a great rush to get it rectified - else no other probs - btw Fantastic car

I had a 997 S when they were first out, then a cab, now on a C4S. Basically I try and different marque and always come back to Porsche, you'd think I would have learnt by now!

Try not to think about it... Actually wasn't too bad on either, have been stung worse before - Cayenne Turbo for eg!
