I've had an OPC advise me that the drivers side front top mount is loose. It's causing a clonk when warm and going over speed humps etc.

I've been told this is fairly common and I should probably do both sides. They were quoting £400+ for the job so I've declined.

I'm thinking about suspension work on my C2 and I've heard (might be wrong about this) that you can fit GT3 top mounts with make the front end more direct.

Anyone tried this?

Also is it possible to 'tighten' the top mounts or is it a replacement job only.

Thanks~!

OPC Guildford did my 993 front nearside top mount for £63 all in. A while-u-wait job.

I've been trying to track this noise down on my 996 for a year now so if this is the cause please let me know! Knocking noise only occurs after 20+ minutes of driving and OPC always send it back to me saying they couldn't hear anything - very frustrating.

Sorry I can't help with your original question but very interested to hear the outcome.

Hi Rawhide,

just interested to hear how you got on with this - did you go replacement route or could they be tightened up after all?

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris - I've not done anything yet. I'll phone a few indies this afternoon and see what they say. I'll post back if I get it fixed

You could get a decent garage to replace the top mounts for less than £200.00. I know I've just had them done. Apparently it's quite common.
I've had a cracking noise from n/s/f. A bit like driving over a can. Changed lower arm. Still there. Only does it on left handers and rarely. Had it looked at by several including OPC.
Also a rattling/almost like a tinkling on both sides.Had both drop links and anti roll bar
bushes replaced. Still there.
Also replaced shims in the pads (allegedly corroded and rattling.Still there.

So far to recap I have replaced
Lower arm n/s
Both top mounts
Both anti roll bar bushes
Brake pad shims.
Needless to say shockers and forward arms/bushes checked and ok.

Ok, I give up. I'll live with the rattles and turn the radio up. Now the passenger seat's rattling. Is it me? Am I ill!
Good luck. Hope you sort your problem.

Rigsby - you sound like me! Nobody else seems to be able to hear all the creaks and rattles I can.... my drivers seat rattles too but have you checked the passenger seat is not the seat belt rattling against the seat back when you're sat at idle (with no passenger obviously)?
