They've stopped working!

More specifically, in between of getting out the car to check oil levels and then getting back in to put the car in the garage, something went awry with the wipers. I got back into the car to find the driver's side wiper lying limply to the driver's side and the passenger side lying over to the other side. I should be grateful that they waited until I got home before letting go, I suppose, rather than in the fast lane of a wet M6!

The motor sounds like it's still moving - or at least it makes the same noise as it does when the wipers worked properly - but the wipers don't move.

My initial (and probably hugely over-simplistic) guess was that whatever links the motor to the wipers had failed, and so they're not now connected to the motor. However, I suppose the fact that the motor sounds like normal doesn't mean that it actually IS working as normal.

Anyone experienced this problem? If so, what was the cause and - more importantly! - how much did it cost to rectify?

Its not that they've simply worked loose on the splines is it? I agree its unlikely to happen to both at once, but you never know.

Happened to me with the drivers side wiper halfway round a very wet Nurburgring ... fortunately they overlap so much that having only one working was no great hardship, and thank god it was the "top" one.

If it is that it'll cost peanuts to fix - basically just do up the nut that holds each one on. Mind you don't break the flimsy plastic cap as you try to get at the nut.

I'll have a look tonight to see whether that could be the problem, Dan - thanks.

Anyone else had similar problems, in case it turns out not to be the issue here?

Happened to me too. Just tighten the nut as above.

Also worth checking the rear. I tookin mine to a carwash (don't ask..), but unfortunately the nut was loose so the wiper was ripped to one side, then snapped. Nice.

Cheers Alan.

I'll check the rear while I'm at it. I read somewhere recently that the parts alone to replace the rear wiper are in the region of £1,100 so I can just imagine the sinking feeling you must have had as it happened!

It's not that bad Only hassle when buying a replacement arm from van zeeden was that there are two different lengths and one part number for both! You can guess the rest! Anyway, they swapped it after much argue. 90 Euros or something.

I think I'd just take it as a message that the rear wiper had to come off, and I'd be happy with the 5kgs or whatever it weighs that I'd saved.

less the weight of the rubber bung to fill the hole in the rear screen of course

My father-in-law came round today with his assorted collection of spanners (being a techno-numpty, my own tool collection is limited to a few screwdrivers and a hammer )so I was finally able to investigate the problem and, lo and behold, one nut was almost undone and the other quite loose.

So, full marks to the PH 993 collective for their correct diagnosis of my windscreen wiper woes! thumbup biglaugh
