Right, after an hour under the car degreasing :filthy: I think I've finally found the source of an annoying oil drip.... It's this

What is it and how much of a job is it to change it?

What model? If it has an electrical connection (as it appears to in the pic), it's probably the oil pressure sending unit.

I'm not sure if the leak is through the unit itself or an O ring underneath it at the mo though. Sits to the left hand end of the N/S cylinder bank.

Hi
Its a bit hard to say for certain,Would be easier if it was zoomed out,But it looks like the top of the vario cam solenoid. If there is slightly curved housing with VARIO CAM FI engraved on it right along side thats what it is.

That's what I'm thinking and yes, that's where it is.... I just can't tell if it's leaking through the potting compound or if there's an O ring gone underneath it.

Do they just come out after the two bolts are released or is there something underneath that will spring out/retain it?

If you unclip the wiring you can undo the 2 bolts on the flange and remove the flange and check the seal. If the bonding fails on the wiring as it exits the solenoid this may be letting oil through as well. If the vario unit is working ok I would not bother two much if it is this, as to replace the solenoid/ vario unit is outside the scope of most DIY and requires the removal of the cams.

thumbup I'll seal the flange and smear a bit of potting compound on the solenoid if that's become porous. Is there an O ring under the flange or is it normally a Hermetite job?

The flange has its own oilseal ,if this is damaged replace the flange if not just reseal.

Cleaned it up and put it back with a bit of Hylomar round it and all seems well at the moment. I was surprised to find it looks like a dry faced joint from Porsche. No wonder it started to leak in the end.
