Well the day finally arrived.
It had been a long week at work, and having been unable to catch a flight home last night, I was left in Manchester struggling to get to sleep knowing that I was to get my grubby and unworthy mits on a car that I never thought in a million years I would ever own.
So there I was on a Con Air flight from Blackpool heading for Stansted to collect my C2 and then head off into deepest Oxfordshire to collect the X50.
As is always the case I was so excited I thought I would soil myself, although Ryan Air did their best to spoil the party by running the flights late
having arrived in the sarf - it was off to RSJ as Joel had given me a very good trade bid for my C2 which saved me the agro of showing the car to a constant line of tyre kickers.
When speaking to RSJ's spannerman and I told him what i was collecting he enigmatically said "they're a bit laggy but they are very fast". Heaven.
The RSJ operation is as slick as ever and having lusted over the mint metal in the showroom it was off to Oxfordshire. (and that GT3 RS they have in stock is mint)
I should add at this time that the final leg of the journey was completed by my brother who, it has to be said, drives like an old man who has been comatose for 15 years.
"FFS man get a bleeding move on ive got a turbo to collect" was said on more than one occassion. He cooly replied by punching me in the mouth.
Anyway, we arrived at the garage to the sight of the car parked on the forecourt pristine and gleaming. I have to confess I developed a semi. Sad I know but there you are, ive admitted my shame.
Anyway, after a fairly swift handover it was time for the off.
Perhaps before I go further you might want to know the spec? OK here it is
996 Turbo
X50
Arctic Silver
Standard Wheels
Nav
Phone
Heated seats
Large leather pack
Large Arctic silver pack
ali gearleaver and handbrake
Cruise
Parkassist
32000 miles
and lots of other nice little bits and bobs
So i fluffed around with the nav for five minutes to load my destination and time for the off, bruised knuckles bro following in his Mondeo ST220.
The nice lady in the car with me (satnav) instantly told me to "complete a legal u-turn as soon as possible" and once she was happy it was time for the off.
Drove the car gingerly for a while. It felt heavier than my C2 but very planted and the cabin was a very nice place to be sitting. Within 5 minutes I was doing my best Mr Bean impression in complete fasination at watching the rear spoiler go up and down.
Eventually we hit a certain motorway and headed east back to suffolk. I was consious of the gorilla in the Mondeo being left behind so I took it easy, but allowed myself a little play as the road opened up ahead.
holy shit this thing is
ing fast. In fourth giving the loud pedal a little prod sucked me towards the horizon quicker than a ride at Blackpool and i completely shit myself when i saw the size of the three numbers on the speedo.
Since that first journey I have run though the lanes of suffolk on more than once occassion and I am now a gibbering wreck.
How the hell can such a large lump of metal propel you so hard. When the turbos start to spool its like nothing I have ever been in. But the grip. oh
ing hell the grip.
The only way I can describe it is the car is being pulled by a big elastic band. you resist in the corners but once you have hit the apex you just get hauled towards the next bend.
It is a truly amazing piece of engineering and i am still completely in awe. when i bought the c2 i had to completely change my perception of speed. now ive got to re-evaluate it again as this car is just so so fast.
I would like to say I am lost for words but, as you can see im not.
Any downsides?
the sunroof has a little rattle.
Although it has a nice growl it is very quiet and whilst i love this at the moment, i suspect in time i will alter the sound track.
I am a complete numpty when it comes to driving, yet tonight, for a short period of time the car hooked my up so well I thought I was Jackie Icyx.
Brake. Turn. Apex. Boost. Blur. Anal Clench.
When looking for a replacement car i thought dirty thoughts of trick GT3's and hard as nails GT2's. I also had to decide on colour and spec.
Firstly, i do a few motorway miles and I knew I couldnt live with a 'three. The GT2 was out of my price league and I would kill myself. The turbo is perfect for me. A long distance mile eater, comfy (cos im gay) with lots of toys to play with. perfect.
As for the colour, the last thing i was looking for was a silver one. however, having looked at and discounted a few dark metalic cars stone chipped to hell (evening loachy
) i have to say I absolutely love the colour and it is now sitting on the drive covered in millions of dead flies with dark grey front wheels covered in brake dust. Just how it should be
I will give it a through wash in the morning and post some pics.
Is the X50 any good? to be honest I dont know. My experience of standard turbos is very limited. all i can say is that this car is epic in a staight line when the turbos are spooling. How much faster, if it is, than a standard car i have no idea.
As far as i am personally concerned motoring perfection has come to my little corner of suffolk.
Oh and it is very very partial to a drop of super plus unleaded
Finally, to all of you who have offered me advice, encouragement and help to realise my dream, both on line and personally (you know who you are) I salute you.

What a brilliant and uplifting write-up - I felt I was there with you, D, you know - telling you to take it easy and keeping an eye out for stones and gravel. I'm totally and utterly jealous of your new car, and a couple of brief excursions in 996TT X50s (and having owned a 993 TT X50) confirm these cars in my mind as, pound for pound, amongst a tiny handful of the most awesome road cars that money can buy. I can tell you now, that you're never going to tire of the speed. You lucky, jammy, lucky, jammy bastard. That said, heartfelt congratulations on the new ship.
I salute you right back, mister, though my middle finger is a little stiff..

Does this mean we have to stop trawling the classifieds?

if you're asking me. no. if you ask me in the presence of my wife it will be an emphatic yes......
At this moment in time the car is perfect and I really cant think of anything else I would want.

Congrats Darren...
Sounds like you made the right choice... Do you find you have to adjust your driving style to the Turbo and 4WD?*

Tis an issue i'm having at the moment, though being one turbo and half the HP short of you
yes but only in a numpty sort of way. the C2 was so alive that you had to be careful you braked properly, got the rear end planted and floored it once you were heading in a striaght line.
this car is far more forgiving and neutral hence the numpty point. it helps you through the bend, and as soon as you have hit the apex you can floor it and it literally feels as if you are being dragged out and thrown down the straight.
Awesome
