Recently acquired a 1999 3.4 996 - only disappointment is the sound (lack of it). Does anyone know who does a reasonably priced sports exhaust system that will improve the sound?

Switches the exhaust on/off. Even when on, it also cuts out for about 1500 rpm ish in the rev range to comply with some german regs. I've just disconnected mine, have it on all the time but there are mods you can do to keep it switchable and get rid of the cut out.

Do it. Do it. Do it.

Then get the relay modded to stop the cut-out between 30-45 (crazy Swiss.....).

Without doubt, it's the best thing you can do to a 996 and your car will love you for it.

Actually someone on here is selling a C4S exhaust with 30,000 miles, which I believe is much louder than the standard 3.4 (and probably pretty inexpensive) - anyone got any thoughts?

The Fabspeed one sounds like a steal at half the cost of the Porsche unit, I'll look into it, cheers.

I am having the standar Porsche exhaust fitted today and by all accounts it is superb!

Will let you know how I get on later.

I had a fabspeed one retrofitted to my first 996, was a no brainer £650ish included full stainless steel silencers and exhaust tips which porsche charge £300 odd for alone. It made a proper porsche bwarp noise and was of medium volume (but standard 996 was dissapointingly quiet for a sports car).

My later 996 which i ordered new had the switchable sports exhaust which was less intrusive but cost a lot more, the prime benefit being you could switch it on and off.

Personally would take a fabspeed again next time and simply remove it prior to sale as its probably going to be worth at least half of its cost back if you sell privately via pistonheads classified or ebay. With the porsche techquipment one then its £1300 odd that goes with the car.

I'd advise you to make the effort to go and listen to the different exhausts in action.
It took me about six months to get around to hearing all the usual suspects , and Wetpipes PSE won hands down.
Yes it is about the most expensive , but to my ears , it sounded most authentically like the traditional flat six porker , with the added advantage of being able to switch to stealth mode if leaving the house early , keeps the neighbours/wife/kids asleep and happy!
You'll have different requirements/ ideas as to what a 'real' 911 should sound like so the only opinion to trust is your own .. Besides mine that is

Cheers guys - I'll go and do some listening - I agree - I have to keep the 'flat 6' sound. If anyone has any experience of what the C4S exhaust would sound like on a 3.4 then pls let me know (it could be a cheaper solution, but don't want to go to the hassle if it's not going to make much of a difference over and above the standard exhaust).

Hi
I am the guy with the spare C4S silencer boxes the replacements I fitted were standard boxes with a by pass pipe welded between the inlet and outlets Sounds fantastic with a Fab speed air intake system no horrid booming at motorway speeds and silent on light throttle perhaps someone could tell me if any BHP increase can be expected but throttle response much improved

...that was important to me too, hence a PSE. Sounds fantastic (not at the moment though - as the car's in hospital)!

JZM a couple of years ago tried to sell me a Roock exhaust (company has gone 'belly' up now, I think), with the comment that it made the car sound like a Ferrari! WTF?! If I wanted a car sounding like a prancing horse, I would have bl@@dy bought one!
