I am getting a puff of blue smoke when I start the car after it has been standing for a few days. Is this normal or have I got a problem with it?

Its a 996 Turbo, 2002 with 34k on the clock,

Thanks for that I have only just had the car for two weeks.

It does look bad, I thought I had a problem with it. I am assuming then I will have to keep an eye on the oil consumption?

Flat engines do this - normal.

The oil seeps down while the car is stood and then burns off when the car is started.

Use the oil level indicator every day and the dipstick once a week.

I had this on all my Porsches so far. I'd be concerned the day you don't see any blue smoke...

don't think that first quotes quite true, maybe all porsche boxer engiines do! Had 3 subarus and none of them smoked with there flat 4's. Had 2 carrera 2's and didn't notice anything much from them either but my tt is embarrasing at times! Was pretty worried about it for a while before i read "they all do that sir"
ps bet you can't find the dipstick!!!

Just another one to say, they all do that sir.

I was worried about mine initially too.

It was parked back facing the front door once. I left the door open whilst I started it and it set all of the smoke alarms in the house off

Hi,

Just to confirm everyone else's comments, they do all do this. I've had 3, 996, 993 and GT3 and they all do it. The oil seeps past the low points on the valve stem seals (I seem to remember, although it may piston rings) and burns off on start up. Disturbing but nothing to worry about. Maybe Scoobys don't do it, but properly engineered!! German flat 6's do.

Dunnred7, its funny you should mention the dipstick, I can’t find any reference to it in the manual? I am assuming then the only way to check the engine oil level is via the on board computer check or is there dip-stick?

Regarding the dipstick, 986/996's have one, 987/997's don't.

Ferrari flat twelves certainly do it. I was in the main dealers one sunday morning when they turned over the motor on an (utterly perfect) F512M. It put out enough oil smoke to cloud the whole showroom for a good few minutes. Sounded amazing though.

Being a dipstick myself from time to time - where exactly is the dip stick in my 996tt?

In your car it's located in the driving seat behind the wheel ...............
