Should I get a Boster (987) S?
Discussion
I'm looking for a car to run around in until I get delivery of my E92 M3, which will be early next year. I want something good to drive, which will depreciate very little and be a no hassle ownership experience. I cycle to work so it won't notch up that many miles, and it doesn't have to be super-practical.
One of the things I'm considering is a 2005ish Boxster S. They seem to be changing hands for £30-35k privately; I would budget to lose £3k over 12 months, does this sound right? The closest dealer if I wanted to go that route is Reading. Looking from their website, all their Boxsters seem to be priced higher than other Porsche dealers. Are they being optimistic, or expecting you to knock them down considerably? Final question, are there any good independents near Windsor?

The M3 and Boxster are different ownership propositions - the M3 will be substantially quicker, have a locking rear diff, and a real gem of an engine. It may not have the finesse that a Porsche has, but it will have a brutality that is entertaining in another way.
Can someone confirm/deny the above about residuals - I assume the large gap is due to different model years?

be careful there is a new 3.4 engine out so the "old" 3.2 (987's) are no longer the latest and greatest and this will effect used prices later this year
if you want one for 12 months get a facelift (986) seem like a bargin at the mo. e.g.
'53 plate , 19k miles, 2 owners etc for £22.5 k - £3k per year is always going to be hard to achieve but you are much more likely with something like this.

Yes, this is 986 vs. 987. As pointed out earlier, beware of the recent update from 3.2 to 3.4 litres. Cheapest option would be to go down the 986 route, as they will have seen the big depreciation hit already. Only downside is, that it's an "old" car

Bargain... why don't you get it yourself

Got myself a 986 s limited edition at the week end: the 550 spyder with 266bhp.
gt silver + cocoa inside and hood. Sport chassis.
pcm, manual box, telephone. 10000 miles from porsche zentrum in germany with factory warranty.
Yes i prefer lhd.
As new and for less than £25000.
I am well chuffed.
I was also going to get 987s with pcm, pasm etc... for £35k... but having had another 986s about 2 years ago and having tasted the bitter taste of depreciation, i tried another approach...

987 is going to get facelifted this year, this will mean a big slap for the current car. Its amazing what restyled bumpers and LED lights do to residuals.
As everyone else said 986 S circa 2004 is a fantastic car especially with Carrera 18" alloys.
A word of caution, once into a Boxster S, your desire for an M3 will wither.
