which 911 do I need?
Discussion
Hi All,
My first post on Porsche forum. Used to drive a TVR Griffith, but now need rear seats. I'm considering TVR Cerberas (boo! hiss! etc), but intend to look at some 911s too (possibly even 928). A couple of questions please (sorry if answered elsewhere, links?)....
1. Will a £15k budget get me a reasonable 964? I think that is the model I want - Carrera 2 coupe - relatively modern, with aircon etc.
2. Does anyone regularly carry kids in the back? How do you find the space? I have two under-5s and want to be able to do weekends away, so must have some luggage space.
Thanks for your help.

£15k should do the job but you should allow sufficient money for servicing and maintenance up to £2k per year.
Re room the C2 has a liitle more space in the boot than the C4 but at best you will get a couple of soft bags in, could do a weekend with kids so long as you dont need the pushchair, nappies steraliser gubbins. Think you can get roof bars and a top box if you really want.
Not sure Id run one as my only car with a family but as a second car it can work with younmg kids. Mine are now 9 and 7 and we can certainly use the old car just fine

Plenty of room in the back for small kids - my 5 year old loves it. Luggage space is a bit limited though, but a couple of soft bags will go in the boot OK.
Have you considered a 968 - you'd have your pick for £15K, similar rear seat space but much more luggage space than a 964, and not much slower?

Agree that a 968 is way more practical, has to be a manual though as the tip is slooooww (after the Griff they will all be a little on the slow side anyway), drives lovely but its not a 911. A 928 is also very very good for space and more room in the back for the bins, drives like a tank though (but could pull the front off your house with a tow rope) but I kinda like that. You can get your pick of 968's for the dosh and double ditto for the 928.
Thanks for the information and ideas so far. To clarify, it won't be my only car, I'll have some estate as well, I just know that if I can't carry the family away for the weekend it'll never get used.
Concerning 968 and 928, I prefer the idea of the engine-in-the-boot driving experience, but should probably drive the others before dismissing them.

964 C2 maybe, but my choice would be a sorted Carrera 3.2, forget aircon it'll not work anyway, wind the windows down!
You could probably get a 930 wide bodied variant as well with a few miles on her for 15-16k.......seem to be holding value nicely too.

Agree with all of this - pay more for air con if you like, but even when it's fully charged it will take and hour to cool down a car that's been in the summer sun - it's just a weak unit.
Think about the 3.2, it's cheaper to run and more reliable than the 964 according to most. I've had 2 and think they're the greatest bar maybe the RS's and GT3's.
I think also that the 3.2 has the most frontal luggage area in recent times.
We regulary went to France, 2 kids in the back, 28" suitcase in the front, 130 mph while they were all asleep - ideal holiday car everyday!
Only get the 964 if you prefer it's appearance.
See my comments on this other post ...
someone else considering a £15k 911
Get a good one and you'll love it. My 3.2 was as fast as the Griff in REAL driving/hooning conditions, and a LOT quicker cross country.

This one seems like it is worth a closer look.

I had a Grif 500 then cerb 4.2,both very fast but the cerb was tons of trouble and I lost a fortune.Sold it and got a 964 turbo (bit more than 15k though) it was totally reliable and with a sports exhaust louder than the TVRs when the turbo came on song. Also I got over taken by a 964c2 diving to Leman in the grif, and I lost him!!! Wot about 930 turbo??
