Do You Remember 10 years or more in an OPC
Discussion
Yes I'm getting old, but I remember as a boy and even up to 10 years back getting such excitement (down boy) strolling round the new and used cars.....today I try very hard while sipping the free expresso to get that excited, I really do try but not just happenning for me as I look at the sea of cloned Black and Grey.....
I can still remember looking round a german showroom in god was about 84 I think picking up my dads first 924, as they were much cheaper than over here.
White LHD, steel wheels, manual windows, vinyl seats, and I slept most of the way back on the fold down seat! The car we went to collect it in and convoyed back with was his 1963 MGB roadster!
Lol I had a happy childhood!
Also remember about 1991 just after the 964's came out looking round a reddy purple metallic (candyapple red?) 964 cabrio with purple leather in a dealer somewhere, I have brum in my mind but may have been london, and swearing i would own that car before I was 21. Well i did and thankfully it was black with black!

I remember going to London with my family one weekend, must have been about 12 years old and we were staying near Hyde Park.
I went for a wander one afternoon and fell over Charles Follett Porsche in a back street - I stood outside gazing through the window at a light blue 928 S for about two hours !
Seem to remember they had a car lift in the floor of the showroom to take vehicles underground which I presume was the workshop or storage facility ? It was very space age, i'd never seem anything like it before !
Certainly left a lasting impression on me !

I used to go to University in Colchester. Some Sundays, probably 12 years or so ago, my flatmate and I used to go to Lancasters (back in the day when they still had just the single premises and sold Ferraris out of there as well) for a look around. The sales staff would always be more than happy to chat all things Porsche/Ferrari even though we did not look like or had the means to buy one of their cars.
I always said one day I would buy a car from there and although I didn't buy either of my Porsche's from there, a couple of weeks ago I did have the pleasure of taking my car to their service department. I did feel a nice sense of achievement!

Do you think if you were looking round a collection of classic Pcars, 993 and back, you would get that feeling back.....I think you would. I feel the same about some of the newer models.

I remember that feeling, and whilst I still get a buzz out of going into an OPC, it's not what it was. There are probably loads of reasons for this, not the least of which being that I got older in the meantime, but things have changed generally in the meantime, too. They limit some BMW diesels these days to 155mph. Even something like a hot Astra will top 150, so in relative terms, a modern 911 isn't just competing with Ferraris any more. Subarus, Evos and a hundred other cars that a Porsche would have previously towered over, are now nipping at its heels in performance terms. Porsche make a lot more cars than they used to now, so a Porsche isn't the same look-and-point affair that it was at one time. I mean - they rebody and rebadge a VW Jeep for God's sake, and a saloon is on its way to push annual volumes in the direction of 150,000 units p.a.. Furthermore, Porsches are now relatively more affordable than they once were, and with the greater numbers being produced, the additional dealerships to support the higher volume, tons of second hand gear around etc...
meh... still cool at an OPC, but no longer do I feel that I'm in hallowed halls.
Great reply Loach - Totally see where you are coming from. Friend of mind recently bought a Gallardo from Birmingham Bentley(Also doubles as Lamborghini nowadays??) and i did feel like a kid again looking at the various Murcis and Gallardos BUT my previous visit to my Local OPC left me looking at 3 Cayennes, a new "Silver" Boxster and a 997s with aerokit.
May i add that approx 14years ago i visited the OPC when it was owned by Glenvarigil and it used to also sell Ferraris at this time, i remember seeing my first Ferrari F40 there and blagging a ride in my dream car at the time - A Red Porsche 968!!! Ahhhhhh, those were the days.

How the memories come flooding back. The first time I saw a Ferrari F40 was in an OPC too, that same one in Colchester.

Last time I was in an OPC (Colchester) they had a 993RS inside
It looked stunning in a light flat blue (lighter than maritime)
I remember walking round it several times

That would be Riviera blue. Lovely shade on a 993 RS.
Was a RHD 993 RS Clubsport subsequently owned by IMOM.
