Autotrader lists a dozen or so sub-£20k 996s. Some are VCAR and some LHD, but a few look OK.

A friend has £18k to spend and can't be persuaded to do the sensible thing (buy a 993).

Thoughts??

tell your chum to save 5 more and either buy a 18k car then have the 5k to make it right or just buy a straight car and go from there.

You'd probably get a better 996 for 18k than you would a 993! But either way thats the lower end of price range, I would say a decent 996 is going to be 22-23k minimum....

Agreed

I've looked at a few today, need to have a good look round and spend about 25K, to find something decent

Sub 22k stuff looks rough in the flesh

Its only a chaep car if you keep it for a few years with no major hassles. You do get a lot of people on here post about buying a cheap Porsche, only to spend the rest of there time on here asking for a cheap fix to yet another problem they have found.
On the other hand an expensive Porsche can be a really expensive Porsche if you buy a dog. In short look at a few get it checked over by an expert and buy the best you can afford.

1000% correct.

Mine had an electrical gremlin which would have cost about £3000 yikes with labour to fix (warranty), Rear Main Oil seal leak for £1000 (warranty), header tank (£400 - goodwiil), plug tube seals (warranty), wishbones (warranty) and three belt tensioners (warranty.)

I paid a bit over the odds for an OPC car when I bought it, but..well... you get the picture.

Henry at 911virgin.com has a good selection of good solid cars, and he knows what a car's worth - he might be a bit abrupt hehe but he knows the 911 market inside out...... Anything being sold cheap is cheap for a reason.

Let me give you an example.

911 996 Carrera 2 Coupe 6-speed manual, 98' R-registration. Fitted with the later clear lenses. Previously supplied by ourselves to a long time friend of 911Virgin. Finished in Ocean Blue with Full Savannah leather. Service History from new. MOT until April 2008, taxed until March 2008. Climate controlled air conditioning, electric windows, mirrors and sunroof. Clear lenses with headlamp wash, traction control, 3-spoke sports steering wheel, soft ruffled leather, driver and passenger airbags, CD player and CD storage. A thoroughly genuine example in lovely condition throughout. Surely one of the nicer first generation 996's currently available. £26,995

Pretty sure you could find one same age and spec in the local rag for £21k, but don't kid youself, you've bought a car needing work.

Good luck thumbup

I got mine for a good price, proving you can get a good 996 for the low 20's, but it takes a lot of shopping around.

I would hesitate at anything under 20k though, I saw a few dogs up at 25k, so the golden rule, buy on condition stands.

Plus, as someone else said, he should stretch his budget and get one in the 20-25k range.

Vesuvius i cant quite work out how u have concluded that this a good value car seeing as they dont quote the mileage.
Is it 20000 or 70000 or 190000 miles ?

Also 17 inch wheels and savannah leather are all the rage !

Just a thought based on this thread...what is the best way to go given that someone could afford a new car (cash no hp etc)?
Buy new and keep for say 3 years..or maybe 5 years..or longer?.. Or go down the second hand route. It would be interesting to know what people think of I supose the thrill of a new car/warranty/peace of mind for 2 years and upto I think 10 if you pay the ongoing warranty fees etc, verses the lower purchase cost of a secondhand car but the potential risks etc,and maybe the someone elses car feeling.
Its one of those that maybe people who could afford new would maybe buy second hand and those that would like new cant quite hit the full price of a new car, or justify the outlay.
If we were all zillionaires easy to answer, but lets assume (fair bet) we all just work bloody hard to achieve what/where we are...

Thanks for the recommendation, actually one of a couple at 24,995 (Bug) / 26,995 (retail)

I don`t think there is such a thing as a cheap Porsche, We`d potentially give 19k or somewhere in the vicinity for a good 79k mls 996 so why go to the bother of advertising it privately ? I think something decent is going to be in the 22-25k range. A few numbers on the speedo might edge the price towards 20k.

Left hand drive will save you money, and you might just get one for your 18k but it`s not a forgone conclusion.

To put you out of your misery Sherman the car`s done around 56k mls from memory. At that sort of age work, miles and condition bear little relation to each other so I would advise purchasing, as ever, on condition. The mileage dictating the most you can ask, the car it`s self the price up to that point.
