Im thinking of getting the 3 detailed before summer.
All the before after photos look great, but Im not sure what this
"paint correction" is.

Is it just a post term for swirl removal?

can someone explain?

Yep, swirl removal. Pic of paint that has been corrected:

Essentially is a process where the top of the paint is removed by cutting compounds and rotary polishing mops. Only the tinest layer needs to be removed (1-2 microns). The pro will start with the coarse and move progessively to fine, leaving a mirror finish.

www.elitedetailing.co.uk/ did mine. I'm losing count how many times I've plugged them now! (show's how happy I am with them) No idea if they do NI trips, but you never know

I used www.elitedetailing.co.uk/ as well for my RS. Can't recommend him enough. Got to be careful with paint correction, some will do it quicker with agressive compound and take of too much paint. The result will probably be as good but you'll have a lot less paint on the car! G from elite detailing will take his time, using a very mild polosh, checking the paint depth as he goes, making sure he's not taking any more paint off than is absolutely necessary.

Paint correction is a detailers term for swirl and light/medium scrach removal .
Its quiet an intensive process (average 10 - 15 hours) of machine polishing the surface of the paint to remove these defects compared to just mopping the car (average 1 hour)
The reason it takes so long is that it is done very carefully using paint depth gauges to limit what paint/laquer is taken off.
Most pro detailers will have these gauges , I know Gurch at elite does , Paul at miracle , ourselves and also a few others that are normally reccomended on here.
We normally take 2 to 3 microns of paint off and always air on the side of caution.
I would say that most detailers get an average of 97% perfection with the finish as its always best to remove as little as possible than go for 100% perfection and risk taking too much clearcoat or paint off.
We always reccomend that paint correction is followed up by paint protection , whether it be with a natural carnauba wax or a polymer/acrylic paint sealant plus a short lesson in wash techniques This way you're protecting the finish and all the hard work that has gone into it .
Cost wise you're looking at around £200 to £300 on average for correction plus paint protection costs , normally £400 to £500 combined.
If anyone wants more info , feel free to email me at info@sportscarprotection.com
Cheers
Dave

I've had a look at his site and am seriously tempted - which service of his did you guys use?

When I had my car done (the yellow RS on the home page is mine), G didn't have the Royale then, and I had the Vintage instead. But I also had the paint-correction, so I'm not too sure which it's meant to be. Best to just contact G direct and speak to him, he can tailor the treatment to suit you. Mine took over 20 hrs and it cost me just under £500.

How long do the results of a paint correction last (is it effectively permanent, or at least until swirlmarks are put back onto the paint by careless cleaning?)

I was recently speaking about this to a family member who works in a bodyshop. He advised that he would not work with an orbital mob in the open but would only do this in the confines of his dust-free workshop, since this could obviously make the swirls worse if debris in the air gets on the body.

How do the detailing companies who come to your house and do the work get around this?

Basically it's permanent until you swirl it up again, which sounds a bit stupid but hopefully YKWIM.

Washing is where the most damage occurs, a few quid on proper washing and drying gear and a little extra time spend on washing properly will have a dramatic effect on how the paint looks once it's smooth and clean.

I guess the bottom line is by being observant and careful.

Gurch from Elite sets up a gazebo and parks the car under it.
