I recently purchased my first Porsche and so the story goes…

…Last Thursday I spoke to Porsche Reading & customer services re: a bonnet respray that was carried out in Sept 05' at OPC Reading due to yellowing of the original paint. They potentially stated that the work carried out was a “goodwill” warranty issue and therefore following completion of the job it has no warranty and consequently they keep no record of the job having ever been carried out?!

Under normal circumstances a paint job would have full lifetime guarantee!

My gripe is the fact that on close inspection the bonnet is like a mini version of the Alps with drips and bumps all over - I used to detail Porsches professionally and know the paint is not up to Porsche usual standard –

So does this mean when Porsche get a "Goodwill" gesture job they save it for last thing Friday?! And if you don’t check it thoroughly enough at the time of collection then that’s tough s**t, your loss?

I wouldn’t like Porsche to do any other goodwill warranty work on my car if that’s their attitude, and surely all warranty work is goodwill as they have admitted a fault and therefore need to rectify it?

Has anyone else had there bonnets resprayed from yellowing of the original paint and were not happy with the job?

Alternatively if anyone has had the work done at Reading and happen to be at a track day or a meet I will happily inspect the finish from a detailers point of view... I've spotted hairs and other discrepancies in the lacquer of brand new 911's and can 99% of the time tell if a panel has been resprayed (badly or well) - but have never come across a finish as bad as mine - I didn’t pick up on this problem originally as I purchased the car unseen off a friend who assured me the car was immaculate (which is how I would describe the car in every other area)

I look forward to seeing your thoughts?

p.s. this was my second experience of dealing with a Porche OPC the first time, I popped in to my local asked nicely if I could talk to someone about a warranty issue and was requested to leave my details and assured someone would call back shortly... They didn't!? – subsequently I’m also still waiting for the call back form Porsche customer services that I was guaranteed would be made last Friday?!!

No I bought the car privately - hence I'm sure part of the reason they are so unwilling to assist in any way.. although the car is still covered by porsche warranty though..

why do you ask?

In essence they made a right mess of a warranty paint job - to me its simple they need to requset to see the car, confirm the error and have a boss sign it off and someone apologise, say that it is a one off and that porsche usually work to far greater standards that this and respray the bonnet...

I guess if the previous owner accepted the job then that's an end to it legally?

My RS has the same yellowing (purchased privately), knew at the PPI that it was a relatively small job but have since put a warranty claim in via my local Porsche approved bodyshop, saves me dealing with those useless gits at the OPC.

Just waiting for them to come back.

Stephen at Premier in Luton is the man I use, they have done at least 2 RS's under warranty.

If you are so fussy then what made you buy this specific car?

I dont see that you can legitimately raise a complaint about the quality of a repair that was done 2 years previous to your purchase.....

Whats to say it wasnt resprayed again following their work.....

Agree with Bennno here re the fact it could have been repainted. An approved bodyshop will check the paint depth and comment, plus they want the work, dealing with a lazy OPC technician is not worth the hassle.

I agree I am fussy Hence the reason I bought this specific car - I also know the old owner personally and at the time a few months ago it was one of only two cars I found available for sale private or trade that had not been in any form of accident

My point is an opc paint job is guaranteed for life of the car - but the paint job carried out on my car has no warranty? - why is that? - Perhaps because they aren’t charging they don’t give a monkeys hence the quality of finish - it doesn’t take a trained eye to see the discrepancies in the paint and from a certain angles it looks awful.. The old owner didnt clean his car so he did not see the blemishes.

I had the paint depth measured as I was also concerned that maybe it had been resprayed since then - it hadn’t

Carbon fibre is a swine to paint. I wouldn't worry too much about it. The car looks goos to me. Any colour tone difference can be explained to people who notice that it is due to the bonnet being made of exotic stuff

The paint has never taken to the Carbon Bonnets
this is a problem with most GT3 RSs
its apparently caused by the water mixing on the Carbon Fibre
if you get it resprayed it will just come back again

they all look dodgy under flourescent light

sorry

I had a carbon bonnet fitted to my red MK 11 GT3 last year. Job was done by the OPC and on talking to the guy he said that they now put on a special primaer which seals the carbon fibre and prevents leaching ( well i believed him). Anyway a year down the road ad it is still perfect

I presume you paid for your bonnet and spray job and therefore I also presume they took some time over the job and got it right.. mine on the other had was a warrenty issue so although the paint on my bonnet hasnt leached it literally has a line of lumps along one side and three very pronouced drips of paint in the middle...

It's basically a really shout sh*te paint job that looks like it was done with spray cans and not something I would have thought should be expected of an OPC..?

I think your best off going to the "Ive got a porker and its not a normal car and you need to occaisionally shell out for stuff" fund.

You will not get any hearing out of Porsche as the owner before you accepted the job and you accepted the state of it when you bought it.

Find and OPC approved bodyshop and get them to do what you want, it should be cheaper than going via an OPC.
