I have a "52" 996 C2 with the Bose sound pack, CDR 23 and CDC-4 CD changer. Is this a fibre optic set-up? I'm trying to find a way to connect the ipod, and am a bit confused. Most compatibility checks seem to suggest fibre optics came on post '03 cars...

TIA.

Hmm - not sure what that means. It was first registered on 04 October 2002. Are all facelift cars with Bose fibre optic?

The vast majority of sept 02---> cars have the most bus. There are a few 52 plate cars around with PCM1, but not too many.

CDR23 is MOST compatible, the BOSE amp will have two orange leads going into it - these are the MOST fibre optic cables. 1 in, 1 out. If the vehicle has a CDC unit then the suggested installation position will replace the CDC - (most - (not MOST(!!)) iPod adaptors will not let you run additional sources - though Gateway 500 has an AUX socket for expansion)

The MOST audio system forms a ring which data flows round, allowing faster / clearer audio. The Headunit starts the ring and data flows round the fitted components in turn, eventually returning to the Headunit, which then interprets the data and plays audio / effects CD selection etc.

Fitting an iPod interface is fairly simple - you need to put the system in the MOST ring, systems like Densions' ICELINK Gateway 500 or Nav-TV's iP interface come with detailed instructions and additional cabling to allow easy self-installation. NB: If the vehicle doesn't have a CDC unit you may need to visit an OPC to have the MOST list updated - basically opening another channel for an audio source - or the system will not recognise the new unit.

As long as you remember that each unit has an 'in' and an 'out' port the system is simple - just think of each unit in the ring as being a bridge between the cables. The MOST connectors have arrows to depict the flow of light so you should find the right one of the two when you need to connect into the ring.

NB: Only disturb connectors on the ring with the ignition and audio systems 'off' or errors can occur.
