Choice of three 968 cabs and i'm having trouble deciding....

1 '93, grey, 108k miles, manual, fpsh, needs service - £9k
2 '92, grey, 89k miles, tipronic, fpsh, needs service - £11k
3 '94, midnight blue, 64k miles, tipronic, fpsh, just serviced - £12k

rest of spec is almost identical & cars are all in good condition. i don't mind the tip (and have owned one before).

i'm looking for a good deal, so has anyone got an opinion?

Think I'd drop number 2, and then let the gearbox and how much you want to spend influence which you go for.

Are they Sports, Club Sports or Coupes? And are they all on original suspension and brakes?

Do you have more info on them? Have you asked on the 968 forum if any of the cars are known to anyone? If someone could vouch for any of them that might also be a deciding factor. There's a small, friendly and very helpful 968 community you should take advantage of.

If I were buying today, I think I'd go for this one:

thanks willdew. they're all cabs. i've got a 993 coupe so i'm looking for a nice, summer cruiser. i've spoken to the servicing garage of each car (all porsche specialists/OPC) and each has vouched for the cars.

i've had number 1 inspected and it was ok. i'm seeing 2 today/tomorrow but have seen a lot of pics. and 3 is too far to go and see but was serviced last week by Porsche Wilmslow.

Seeing as they are all Cabs they will fetch a higher price but check to see if any of them have had Cams replaced, heads repaired, clutch/flywheel replaced, calipers refurbished etc. Recent replacements would swing my decision and any cars that have not had these done could/will need them doing so bare that in mind.

Check the history too, more services by an OPC later in life would not be a good thing IMHO.

A deal or the best long-term ownership proposition? Painful experience has lead me to think the latter is the best way to go. I'd try and work an acceptable price with the owner of car 3.

D'oh - sorry, didn't see they were cabs.

Think I'd be tempted to go for number 1, and get them to service it for you for that price. Although I think 3's equally keenly priced - I just personally think you'll get a higher percentage of your money back when you come to sell the first one.

The owner of 2 was the only one that didn't inspire confidence (there was just something about him).

The owner of 1 is a fellow Pistonheader (whatever that tells us!!).

The owner of 3 won't accept offers.

Mmmm...

Agreed that minimising the likelihood of big bills should be a priority (given car price to possible cost to fix things ratio), and that paying extra up front to avoid them is advisable, but do you think mileage is an indicator of the chance of things going wrong on the 968?

I'm no so sure myself. I think there's no problem putting quite big miles on them and how well they've been cared for is more important.

i'm leaning toward 1 (high mileage doesn't bother me) but the owner wants £9000 and I've offered £8500 and then £8700. not far apart I know but the car isn't perfect and needs some work doing to it and i really don't want to pay any more. we're a bit stuck....

Another cab, thought youd only just sold the last one! For £300 difference I'd bite the bullet and go for it if the cars any good, the 300 squid isnt going to far towards any work anyway. Or if the old competitive spirt woont allow make another offer to splt the difference again and hope he gets to the same thought. I would still say that 9K for a 968 cab isnt a bad price.

the last one went last summer to make way for the 993, but luckily i'm now in a position to have the 993 and a cab. and i loved the 968 you sold me so much that it seemed the obvious choice. while a manual gearbox would also make it quite a different beast.

problem has been that the deal you gave me was so good (admittedley in the depths of december when no-one was buying cabs!) that i've been unable to replicate it.

968's do not seem to be selling particularly well over the last year so I would think you are well within your rights to offer £8500. Maybe the seller will change his mind after a month or so of not selling the car. Some people have had their 968's up for sale for many months before getting their sale so its definately a buyers market.

Ditto that, its a buyers market but some sellers seem prepared to advitise for ever before getting a dose of reality and finding a buyer. I like the 968 cabs but if my budget was over 10K an early boxter would be very tempting ......

I agree that 968's have been slow over the last 12 months
but they seem to be selling quite well now. I have been looking
at the market for one and the last month or so has seen them
pick up and prices starting to firm up as well.

Not 100% clear to me when you say (in original post) that you've owned a tip before, if you mean a 968 tip.
If not, then be aware that the 968 tip only have 4 gears in it which means each gear is really wide = it's really pretty damn slow by porka standards.
I know this because I used to own a 968 cab....

not sure this model commands these prices any more
so be prepared for a big knock in value nwhen you come to sell on...

Just to pick this up again....

in the end i went for number 1 (cilla!).

It's a lovely grey, manual 968 cab that I tracked down in Glasgow and had inspected by George Morrisson. The owner (a fellow pistonheader) has agreed to throw in a tank of petrol and a valet and i'll be picking her up next weekend.

Can't wait!
