I previously owned a 968 cab tip (and currently own a 993 manual) but test-drove a manual 968 yesterday.

I found the clutch quite uncomfortable and was wondering if this is normal.

Basically the clutch needed to be pushed quite hard down and there was very little "travel" ie the clutch caught just an inch or so off the floor.

I'd imageine that, if this is normal, it would become quite hard work on the daily commute. And it seems much harder work than my 993.

So is this normal or does the car sound like it needs a new clutch?

Thanks guys.

It's not normal.
Mine's got a recent clutch in it, and the pedal is quite long, with the clutch disengaging in the first 1/3 of it's travel.

I wouldn't know if the one you tried is badly worn, or just needs some sort of adjustment.

The clutch in my 968 was lighter than the one in my MG ZT-T so this doesnt sound right at all.

Yep if it's anything like the 944s clutch it is hydraulically actuated and therefore should disengage without any real effort.

My 944 lux has just turned 80 (k miles) and gear changes are as smoooth as a babys behind

my 968cab supposedly had a new clutch when i bought it but i was very unhappy with it - heavy and biting late. nothing like either of my previous 944s. I took the opportunity to have it changed again when other work was being done, it was a little lighter afterwards but remains considerably heavier and harder work than the 944. the bite is now in the first 1/3 of travel however. what you describe does not sound right. thankfully clutch replacement is a lot easier than on a 944

However, I should add - a clutch is c. £220 and relatively straight forward to swap, so I wouldn't let it stop you being interested in the car if they fix it for you, or knock you £500 off the asking price.

As long as the flywheel isnt knackered as well - add another £500 plus fitting for aftermarket copy.
