OK I'm slowly working out what model and spec I want to buy, so now I need to work out how I go about buying a good car for a cheap price!

How much markup do you think the independant's have - I heard someone say they expect a 8K margin!!! In which case how much could I expect to haggle off the price?

Do you think independants are much more money than private?

Whichever I did, I would probably want an independant survey, would you recomend that? How much should I expect to pay for the survey.

Obviously I'd be spending a chunk of money, but I really want to keep the cost down (don't we all) so I don't want to pay OPC prices.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Private without question..you'll get a cheaper car, probably a better car ,know whose been driving it and hopefully be able to gauge the type of use of the car..you wont get that in a showroom with some ex-carpet salesman spinning you a yarn..all imho of course soapbox

I'm thinking exactly the same - especially as its a cash purchase, so I don't need finance, which is where I guess a lot of independants get business from.

But then I heard that many private advertisers are asking a lot of money for their cars because they genuinly feel their car is better than anything else in the world (just because they are passionate about their car)

Which is why I wonder how much I could haggle off an independant, because it would be more conveinient and they don't seem any more money than private sales and if I was getting it checked out with a 111 survery then it would be OK anyway wouldn't it?

NB What is a 111 survey??

He said "cheaper" not "cheap", which is generally correct if you purchase privately
