In about 2 years (using my 30th as an excuse!) I plan to buy a 996TT and use it as a daily driver with the hope of it being a long term keeper.

Firstly am I mad?

Secondly Camtune and the like. Best to avoid or not?

no, not mad at all.

(I used my 30th as an excuse to buy a 911 too!)

Camtune seemed okay to me - you of course, pay more for the services, and its worth shopping around, including the private sales, just in case, but other than that..

Any idea of a breakdown Fidgits - Compared to a C4S or C2 as i have saw a few TT's with lowish milage from £41-44K, TVR Centre has one that i can think off the top of my head.
If it came down to paying £38-39K for a 2002 C4s but there is a 2001 TT at £42-£44 then i would probably push that extra mile "IF" the running and servicing costs are not that much of a difference.

Not mad at all. The 30th Birthday is a milestone and what a great way to mark it (if you are into cars of course)

As an everyday car - totally practical and I mean totally but budget 2-3k a year for keeping it on the road.

Go for it...!!!

£2-3k a year to run a Turbo? Is that including fuel??LOL, i will stick to the C4s i think. My friend has a Bentley Conti that costs him £595 a year?? 550bhp,200mph.

Has your friend heard of depreciation? Probably over £595 a month! Turbo would be much cheaper all in if you include that.

Not too sure about that, i would say both cars lose there value at about the same astonishing rate - he paid £82k a year ago and i reckon its now worth £74k, i would assume that the tt loses value at a similar rate.

Thats what makes an early tt a bargain..a 2000 year car near identical to a 2005 car and 30k cheaper..why pay so much more for a number plate...old 996tt's certainly not losing 10k a year (unless you buy from a dealer that is

Hold on. You are not comparing like for like on the depreciation front. The original poster said he wanted a 996tt as a 30th B/day present to himself.

These cars are around as low as early forties up to late sixties... now if the OP buys wisely and gets a car for around the £50k mark (not going to be hard in 2 years time) how much do you think he is gonna lose? Certainly not as much as your Bentley Chum, that is for sure.

As for running costs... this largely depends on how much you drive it... but if you bank on 2-3k a year that easily covers the Porsche annual service, a set of tyres, and any odds-sods that you might come across.

Porsche warranty (if chosen) is the best part of a grand a year - whether the OP wants to go down that road or not is another issue.

Thanks for the input guys.

On the warranty front I will want one, likely to go the OPC route for warranty but unlikely to purchase from there as have seen their prices and read about them on here.

Thats a bit harsh - its a great car to drive and truth be told has allot more presence than any 911 IMO and 550bhp 200mph cars cant be sniffed at - My point was he has only paid for the annual service and he drives it everyday with no issues whatsoever wheras the quote of 2-3K a year to run a TT seemed a bit on the high side.

I'm pretty sure that includes incidentals, including tyres and stuff...

the fact is, a brand new 997TT should only cost a service (once every 2 years/20k isnt it?) - whereas your talking about a potentially 6 year old 996TT which will have a lot more incidental costs - I would expect at that age the Bentley would cost a lot more than a 996TT to run...

You may have a point BUT i think the Germans ironed out any quality issues that you may have found in the original T's and the Arnage etc - I find the car close to flawless and can think of many a car that do luxury and speed so well.

Excluding depreciation my 996TT has cost me £4k to run, in the last 3 years.

Great. Well if you put it like that, it only costs £364 for a 12k service in a 996TT.

420bhp and it would say bye-bye to the Conti all day long. byebye

All day long? Not so sure - Dont look behind you after 180mph as the Conti will be saying by by to a 420 TTwavey

Alas for the Conti, not every road is a runway... Wait, I suppose you think that a Bentley Continental would be hanging off the back end of a TT across country? hehe

Did they even bother to time the Conti around the Nurburgring?
