I am about to take delivery of a 986 Boxster S & would like to be able to take my 3 yr old son out for a spin every now & then!

Can anyone let me know if it is possible to de-activate the passenger airbag, or is this something that I will need an OPC to do for me?

Cheers

Hi,
Yes, it is possible to get it de-activated. I had mine done on my 987 at an OPC but there was a previous version for a 986.
My 5 and 7 year old are turning into real petrol heads and love my 987.

Just had one fitted on my GT2 clubsport to take my nephews out - a word of caution you will need a Porsche childseat since in order for the unit to function there is a seatbelt type clip that needs to be fitted into the unit. They wont sell you this unit separately. I think the cheapest option is then to get a booster seat which is a bit frustrating for something that shouldnt cost more than a few quid.

if you are taking a 3 year old out you will need the full seat with back support.
I have one in my 996 that I am having to let go, I might sell the porsche zoom seat from it.

Totally - I was just thinking of the cheapest way of getting hold of the seatbelt clip assuming you had an appropriate child seat.

Jonny,

Can you let me know how much you would let the clip thing go for?

It's attached to the seat, so its all or nothing.

I am waiting to see what I replace 996 with, but it will something run of the mill so I might just use the porsche seat in that as it is quite a good seat.

If I am going to use the "normal spare child seat" we have I will email you re selling the seat.

It's black with grey and cost £200 new. can be seen on porsche website.

Hi

there always seems to be some Porsche child seats on e-bay. i bought one because i wanted the buckle to plug in to the deactivator and not the seat. it cost me in the end though £110 which is a lot for a buckle but the chapest way i could find to solve the problem.

Thanks guys, I'll have a browse on ebay - Jonny, if you end up selling it, I'd be grateful if you could ping me a mail with the price (alex_keyse@hotmail.com). I only need the buckle, but will buy the whole shebang if necessary (no offence, but I don't trust used child seats..)

I had one fitted to my Cayman S but I don't need a Posche seat. I just use a MaxiCosi seat in there.

The OPC fitted a ket-switch into the end of the dashboard and an illuminated display in the centre console that comes on when the bag is de-activated.

I have a 986. Had to get the "de-activation bar" fitted. Basically a bar bolted under the pass seat with a seat belt fixing attached. The porsche seat (no other seat fits this) has a clip which slots into this and disables the air bag, light on dash illuminates to let you know. The bar is about £200 fitted, and the seat was £470!! So in all its not cheap. There may be cheaper seats in the range but that one covers the age range 3-8 as expands in height..
