So.... should I spend £1500 on a PSE for my 996 C2? I do want a bit more noise, but don't want to go mad (I have an Elise for that). Any comments welcome.

Also - what does the switch do? Does it simply act as a volume control? Or did I read somewhere that you need to be going over a certain speed for it to operate?

The switch mutes the 'sports' noise. The exhaust automatically goes into 'quiet' mode from between (approx) 30mph and 43mph. Otherwise nothing tricky. You can override the quiet mode, by either getting the relay moded, or disconnecting the plug-in connector in the engine bay, but that totally disables the switch.
IMHO - unless you need the switch function, there are better system out there - Many of which have been discussed within this forum before....Try doing a search

If you have the OPC warranty, then the PSe is the only way forward.

Other than that, Tubi are the dogs b0llocks I hear.

PSE - Yes, definitely on the 996.
Switch - not essential, IMO.

Have a sift thru 'www.youtube.com' to listen to the effect of the PSE...... and turn the sound up. Suggest you search 'Porsche C4S' as it yields some pretty fierce clips on PSE....
