I know this issue has been discussed before but it seems to me that there hasn't been a definitive answer. So much so that many Porsche owners clearly flout what I understand to be Stuttgart's official line.

As cabs go, as I understand it that line says no to 18" wheels on ANY pre-95 cab (but yes to some later cars if certain modifications are made).

So what's the latest view? Does anyone run 18"s on '94 cab? And if so, do they have any problems? Can smaller tyres make a difference? Or is it now considered enough just to fit the steering brace to any 993? And why do 18"s seem to be ok on the 964?

(After the collapse of my Boxster purchase) I've seen a 993 cab I like but want to make sure it'll look the business! It will only be used for road use, not on the track, if that makes any difference.

Thanks all.

If you're out there Henry - I've just spotted that you're selling a '94 cab with 18" wheels. Is this now considered acceptable? Do you have an view on this?

Cheers.

Have a look on the 993 section of the PCGB website. You will find chapter and verse on 18" wheel fitment to the 993. This includes the official Porsche recommendations and what people have actually done.

Thanks PP - Believe it or not I have actually checked the PCGB site and there's almost too much on there! My conclusion was that Porsche had a view, that had since softened/changed. But that most people just did what they wanted anyway.

How about a different question....

Has anyone suffered any serious problems by fitting 18"s to an earlier car?

I ran my 993 Carrera 4 ( 1996 ) on 18" Speedline split rims.
The ride was harder than on the 17" Cups, and the car felt a little more "fidgety." Once I got used to that, no problem.
I tried Bridgestone SO2's, Contisport, and Michelin Pilot Sport tyres during the time I owned the car.
For me the Michelins were by far the best tyre, albeit a little more expensive.

Someone on the PCGB forum has just posted the following.....

"Adrian Streather states in his book The Essential 993 (p292) that Porsche have indeed approved this... "wheel dimensions of up to 8Jx18 for the front and 10Jx18 for the rear are now approved on all narrow body 993s from model year 1994 to 1998."

This appears to be from the 2005 Herstellerbescheinigung for the 993 (don't ask me how you pronounce that one properly!)"

If that's the case then it will mean the end of one of the longest running debates in Porsche history!!
