If so please email (if you can) me as I am looking for either a Boxster S (can be between 2000 and 2005) or a 911 996 and will probably be able to pay more than you are getting in px for a nice car. Looking for a well looked after car with FPSH and no accidents. email dimitri5563 at a o l dot com thanks.

With the greatest respect to you Fidgits you are not 'about to px or sell your car'. Anyone else about to px their car? dimitri5563 at a o l dot com no spaces. This site doesn't let me email anyone.

well, you havent exactly specified your position or interest...

I can tell you from experience finding a good 996 takes several months - in which time I MIGHT be ready to sell...

though yes, if your looking for something next week, then no, mine isnt, however, there is a lovely 996 C4 in the classifieds worth a look.

Just hoping to buy a nice car at a good price from somebody who was about to do a deal with a dealer and maybe I could pay a little more than the px price and everyone's happy. I have personally sold lots of my own cars to people I know for the px price I would have got from the dealer.

ah okay, you were hoping to bag a bargin from someone who had been raped on a trade-in with a dealer..

good luck, though I imagine most people would expect a private sale price for a private sale, you may get it slightly under book, but not much, after all, people take trade-ins for the convience and security..

I did try a partex at OPC (yes, I was bored and in the area) but I felt my belt unbuckling turning into their road nuts

That attitude is exactly why people are stuck on here without a sale for months on end. Be realistic. I sold my last 4 cars on here (at prices ranging from £19,000 to £72,000) and sold every one within 7 days to a private buyer. Why? Because I know if people are prepared to pay anything close to dealer price, they'll feel safer going to a dealer.

They may not have been 'raped'. A 'trade' price is normally a fair price. The dealers have to make a living, cover their considerable overheads, give a warranty, look after their customers and put up with all the messers etc etc. Rather them than me. And yes, I suppose I am looking for a bargain on a nice car if honest. Don't see anything wrong with that. I can understand why people would rather sell to a dealer though than to a private person but most would like a little more money and here I am. No problem if I don't find anything on here as I'll pay the extra to a reputable dealer and get the peace of mind that goes with it.

Hi Elex. I don't have a 911 to sell but I know where you're coming from. Like anouther poster I've sold a number of fairly expensive cars upto £55k and would, under certain circumstances, have been willing to sell to a private buyer for "a bit" more. My experience is that private sales are not usually much higher than trade prices - both of which are typically a lot lower than "retail" prices.

Anyone any real experience of selling privately much higher than trade (i.e. >1000GBP) - honestly?

Oh, I agree completely.

A lot of sellers (of all cars) have an inflated opinion of their cars worth, and because its on a dealers forecourt for £xxx then they should be able to get that.

However, my point was on the flip side, which is, why would someone take the risk of a private sale for trade price, they wouldnt, they'd sell it trade.

I completley understand where the OP is coming from, though IMO unless he's prepared to turn up with a big check to the first good offer he gets, then he's simply a private buyer looking for a bargin.

Nothing wrong with that - but I stand by what I said earlier - which is to find a good one will take months (depending on budget) - so he'd be as well off to have a look at whats up for private sale, rather than hoping someone comes along with a kind heart and says "yes, sure, come waste a day of my weekend to look at my car, as the extra £100 on top of the dealer price your offering makes all the difference to me".

As for dealer margins, well thats a job for Kevin to discuss - but i've heard some appaling trade-in offers recently (one nearly £10k under book, £15k under what the Dealership would probably sell it at), and the fact remains, no-ones going to sell a £32k car privately for £26k just because some stealer offered £25k....

No. But OPCs typically have around a 7K margin on a car. (Seen it on my own, too!)

Its not unreasonable - when you consider what their costs are and the requirement for some profit!

Given both seller and buyer take risks on a private sale it seems reasonable to "split the difference" when selling privately. And I'll bet a buyer would snap up a car on that basis.

But if buyers want trade-in prices and sellers want forecourt prices - well - there's unlikely to be a deal. Traders offer a service for their money.

Reality is you don't "split the difference" though - private sales prices are usually much nearer trade.

Last car I sold was a loaded X5d some time ago - these were going for £36-37k retail at the time, so I was being offered 33k - the best trade prices. I had it advertised optimistically at £36k - knowing I'd have to move at bit.

Private seller wants to buy it - we negotiate & I get 34k for it. I'm happy, as I've got an extra £1k, buyer happy as he's saved several £k. In my experience most private buyers at these levels aren't daft and know where trade are pitching prices - and just offer a bit more to the deal to keep both sides sweet.

I think the offer of the OP is still valid - as I understand it, if anyone is shifting their e.g. 2002 996 911C4S to a trader for say 33k (to be retailed at 40k), then try him as he's got say 34k cash waiting (so not wasting anyones time as implied above). Sounds like a potentially good deal for both sides to me as long as both sides take usual precautions for such a sale. Looking at it from a private buyers point of view - why pay more than £34k? The seller can't get near this from a dealer, and a private sale offers none of the "sale of goods act" protection wrapped up in the £40k retail price (which you'd probably haggle down to £38.5k/£39k anyway).

Seems a perfectly reasonable request from the OP. If you are physically about to chip your car in in the next few days why not do a deal and effectively cut out the middle man?

I've been in a position several times where I've been offered a poor trade in with a "take it leave it we don't really want your car" attitude and would gladly have sold the car to some one who really wanted it and appreciated it for a few notes more.

PH is the ideal place to do this.

Understand OP post but isn't this opening this forum to every single private buyer coming on here and saying "hello I've got cash...who's part exing this week?". In fact Henry will probably post this every day being prepared to give a little bit more than the OPC I'm sure.

Most of my porkers have been very good deals on my part but you still have to work to find the right cars and get them....maybe thats part of the fun though?

There are loads of cars on the market at the moment, its definately a buyers market in almost every area, bar maybe all forms of RS.

Get on the phone...make some calls...send some emails.

I think elex is right to ask. There are a lot of cars that are very well cared for sold for perfectly good reasons and for equally perfectly good reasons (eg there are millions of 996 or Boxsters out there) the trade may not put a very high value on them. For example. A couple of years back I sold an 8 month old E46 M3 in absolutely mint condition, all the extras, with 900 miles on it, cost new £43k, for £35k, to a dealer. I had advertised it privately but no takers. That would have been a good deal for someone, and I'm sure that plenty of people walked onto forecourts and bought less good M3's for a lot more since then.

The dealer incidentally was highly professional and a pleasure to deal with, once I had got over taking a £8k haircut. But, then, I needed the money.

CardiganKid - your example is perfect. If someone had offered you £36k you'd have been delighted to lesson the blow a bit to a £7k hit. The key issue is that you didn't have a lot of time to hang out for a 37-38k private sale - even if it were achievable.

Having said all this - perhaps this should really be placed as an advert "wanted-cash waiting" rather than a thread - may take a while for a bargain to come along though.
