996TT went off to OPC again this morning for them to have another go at fixing a problem with my PCM, and they left me a new Boxter S to hoon around in for the weekend.

What a fantastic sountrack this little baby belts out. Makes my TT sound like a sewing machine.

Annoying that Porsche have engineered out proper sports car sound on the TT and that I will have to spend a few £k replacing the exhaust to engineer it back in again.

Phooey.

Have to say that the lack of sound is the most dissappointing thing about a standard 996tt (IMO). I am thinking of putting a Tubi system on mine and was wondering what peoples experience of them has been.

Group buy Gixxer?

It's deja vu all over again

My 930 is pretty quiet too - I suppose it's the turbo vanes evening out the exhaust pressure that really does it.

OPCs have an annoying habit of loaning out Boxster S cars. The big problem with them is that they are loads of fun and as you say (expecially in tunnels and near walls) the sound has to be heard to be believed. On top of that the hood only takes about 14 seconds to go up or down and then you think: Ah - no luggage space, this car IS unpractical. Imagine then ones horror on opening the bonnet to see a bigger space than a whole person (I know, I experimented). Back boot much be rubbish then I thought. But no, a huge boot there too.

Why do they do it? Damn them.

This is an interesting one for me, as I have a 987 Boxster S - but, call it `grass is greener syndrome' if you will, I can't help thinking about my next purchase and whether I'd like a 996 turbo or 996 GT3. So, whilst there are obvious differences in the boxster and the 996s (engine layout / interior etc), I'd like an objective view of whether it's worth hankering after a 996 or to either order a new 3.4 987 or wait a bit for a 997 Cs. I came to the boxster after a TVR tuscan and cerbera, so whilst I appreciate the quality of the Boxster, the thought of all that lovely power is seductive!

I had a 987S courtesy car while my car was in for a service. I thought it ok but was glad to get back into my GT3 - a much more exciting/involving car and far better sound. Coming from TVR's, you may think the same.

Above just my viewpoint and appreciate many Boxster S owners may find a GT3 a little too involving.

I had the same dilemma after my Boxster S ... the next car I was buying outright, so I was like a child in a Candy store. My local Porsche dealer, gave me a Carrera S for the weekend complete with sports exhausts and the chrono pack - I was hooked. What a noise and what an accomplished car.
The 996 Turbo and GT3 are both awesome cars, but just weren`t for me (don`t think the looks ever completely won me over) I am now well happy with my 997S... you won`t look back with any of them, but the GT3 or the 997 with the sports exhausts will give you that hair on the back of your neck feeling..

Turbos will alway be quieter due to the way they work. I has an SL65 AMG Merc and sold it cos it was too soft and sounded horribly muted.

I put a Milek on my 996 TT and it makes a big difference.

Enought to get black flagged for noise on most tracks ! It resonates a little at certain revs but not to the degree that it is annoying.

A DMS 550 BHP re map made the engine noise quite a bit deeper as well. She sounds a bit V8ish under hard accelleration now ! (This car for sale on pistonheads !)

Boxter S is a great car and makes much noise but produces little performance compared to a TT or a GT3. I had one as a courtesy car recently and thoroughly enjoyed driving it but you put your foot down, all the right growly noises come out of the back however, forward progress does not match the noise !

If you want glorious sound and performance to match rob a bank and get a 997 GT3. Awesome !

Comparing their grunt to GT3s and TTs simply isn't fair

I still maintain my insult of choice that they sound like washing machines, all of them, except that Fabspeed on the other thread. All cars should sound like Aston Martins. Period.
