Polarised and differning view of Porsche drivers
Discussion
I weighed up the choices between hopping on a Central line and off to Liverpool St for a connection to Chelmsford and return this afternoon against a spin in the C4 from Aldwych and back into town again. Now every sane and rational argument says (probably correctly) train every time?
No - C4 won!
What a boring crappy drive except for the amazing polarity in how OTHER drivers treated me! The differences are extreme and not always what you expect. (I dont often sit on the M25 etc in the toy so hence this is and was rather novel!)
I made the time more enjoyable (an oxymoron) by 'testing' the different ways that the typical commuter and M25 driver reacted to me. Sometimes I would indicate well in advance of changing lanes/pulling over and wait to see the response of the person I would be pulling in front of... other times, I would simply drop a gear and pull over without them even having to change gear.
I got more horrid looks and scowls from old pr4ts in naff cars than any van drivers or even the generic boy racers! (there were obvious exceptions and stereotypes but this wasnt a very controlled epreriment!)
It just goes to show that a journey can be entertaining for all the wrong reasons and two particular HGVs summed everything up; 1) No gap infront of me but he flicks his indicator on to move into my lane, I dont even ease off but flash him indicating him to pull out and I was aware of him. Not only did he thank me but waved as I passed him and then flashed his thanks again once I had passed him to ensure I knew and apprciated the gesture. 2) A different HGV decides he wants my lane and just starts driving into it. I have nowehere to go so full beam and the horn (I am alongside him). he keeps coming so I am stuffed, drop a gear , ease off and as soon as practical move into lane 3 and pass the pr1ck then return into the middle lane to be treated by every hand gesture known in Christendom! Falshing of lights and if I were deaf I would have been further deafened by the lip reading which left little to my imagination.
Two 'professional' drivers and two very very digfferent outcomes. Why? What on Earth goes through somebody's mind processes to behave in such diverse and amusingly confusing (from a logical point) fashion?
There are many more but I wonder whether it is magnified by the car or is the way it is on the M25 etc etc? (I am sure the car made a huge difference and cannot be the only one who has experienced stuff I never see in the tractor!)

I think it's more of a southern thing. I toured around the south last August on hols and on two occasions was subjected to severe road rage that i've never witnessed oop north.
One guy had a go at me for braking hard to avoid a collision with him - i was at the time giving way to him on my LEFT on a roundabout!!
I'm not saying road rage doesn't happen oop north but generally people appear more tolerant.

Interesting you think its a southern thing. I live in the south and, of course, fully understand that some utter
s are going to start driving like mentalists at the mere sight of my very brightly red sports car. Thankfully its a tiny minority. Its true, though, that when driving the bright red sports car it pays to be more polite, more courteous, smooth and proactive in avoiding any minor confrontation than is strictly necessary in a "stealth" green Vectra in any case. Sadly when I have toured all over the country I have encountered both cheery waves and coffee beans - simply for being there.
Fact of life. Some people are
s. One just has to accept it - and move on.Having owned a Porsche for a little over a year and 18000 miles I reckon this attitude thing is bogus.
I drive three different cars: The Porsche, a people carrier and a little peugeot 207 and I haven't noticed any differences or trends whatsoever. I reckon you notice what you look for -- I guess if you're cruising about preening yourself in a Porsche doing social experiements you're bound to create a reaction.
Trick is to just get in the frikkin' thing and drive how you drive.
Having said that very occasionally a modern hot hatch like a Honda Civic Type R will wind it up a little as I go by and follow for a while before giving a flash or a cheery wave when we part ways. Chavs don't tend to do that in their comedy cars, but then again I do tend to try and get to where I'm going enthusiastically so maybe they can't keep up?

Only ever had positive reactions in 964 and 993, especially 114dB 993, everything from kids going mental, suicidal camera photographers, van drivers shouting (good things
), and the last time i was out in central london a cyclist head to toe in lycra came up to my open window, was expecting sh1t, instead he says "mate you've made my day, that sounds fuc4ing brilliant, have a good drive" ?!?!?! WTF i love my 993

SM - Is bang on the money here...
It is all in the mind of the person driving the car -
The only thing that changes anything is if you drive like a c*** expect to be treated like one. Having said that, there are a few people on the roads in this country (I think it is fair to say more down South than Ooop North) that have just got the raving hump with everything in general and this is reflected in the way that they drive their cars.

Sorry. You are absolutely wrong.
I drive a TVR, a Porsche and a Vectra on a regular basis. You are right that 95% of people treat you the same no matter what you drive. Some people drive like knobbers and some people drive like saints around you - down to them not the car one is driving.
But there's a small percentage that DO treat you differently. Yes, thank God, its a small percentage. But they ARE out there. I've been sworn at, swerved at, laughed at whilst broken down by the side of A82 (the
s actually made my wife cry) and I am certain that if I'd been in the Vectra I'd just have been ignored. I am extremely happy for you (and the others) who have, through good fortune and courteous driving no doubt, avoided the experience but you are incorrect if you think it doesn't exist.
had an incident with an italian truck driver a while back on the a1, there was road works and tail backs for about 5-6 miles, i took a detour off the A1 through some country lanes and back to the A1 a bit further up north.
trying to join I sat for about 5 mins waiting for somone to let me out, traffic was doing about 1.5 mph on the odd occasion it wasnt stood still.
anyways, I spotted a gap 3 trucks away, in front of a italian truck, nudged out a little, waiting to shove my self in.
1 meter from me jumping into the gap the guy put his foot down and was waving his hands, redfaced and shouting at me.
tit.
so eventually I joined a bit down the way behind him, managed to get in front then slammed on, and stopped for about 5 mins to see what he would do.
shame he was only a little guy, he just sat in his truck waving his fist, to be fair if he had got out I would of dragged him kicking and screaming like a little girl across the hard shoulder by his "mario" style moustache, and would prolly still be in clink now for it.

Strange behaviour that's based on the type of car I drive I only ever experience with middle aged men in rep mobiles who try to impress me with their driving skills. I let them have their fun and think to myself that I prefer to be overtaken/blocked in my Porsche to being in their place...

It's $100,000. This is one of the fastest production cars on the planet.
