High Mileage 993?
Discussion
Dear All,
I'm in the market for a 993 cab (hence the anticipatory name) though unfortunately on a pretty limited budget.
Can anyone give me any advice as to how higher mileage (i.e. 90k to 110k) 993s behave and what specifically should have been done/will need doing? I hear at that age a second clutch replacement may well be in order as well as the wishbones and the dampers... do hideous rebuilds lurk at 111k?
Plus, if anyone has a lovely clean one going for a song please do get in touch.
Yours with thanks,
Giles

Look for evidence that the suspension has been replaced - the original equipment will be dead by that mileage.
I seem to remember from my own 993 research that clutches are good for 60-80K miles, depending on how you treat it, so at 90-100K a replacement clutch will probably have a reasonable amount of life left in it.
The engine is, by reputation, good for 150K+ if it has been properly serviced and looked after, so there's not necessarily a pricey engine rebuild on the horizon.
I ummed and erred about buying a leggy 993 at 98K - it had been well looked after and had a good service history but I just couldn't quite come to terms with the approach of six figure mileage and the worry that, psychologically, this would make it much harder to shift in a couple of years when it comes time to move on.

Mileage is not a problem with these vehicles mines on just over a 100,000 and running better than ever. As per the previous posters remember these cars will be about ten years old and at this age the dampers and suspension bushes are past their best.
Agree, at a high mileage it would be good to see evidence of a clutch change. Although mine hasn't and is still working perfectly.
Don't want to overstress the point but 100,000 is nothing for these cars. It's a psycological threshold for buyers but means nothing mechanically.

You dont really, but since in every "i want a 996" thread someone pops up saying you want a 993, I thought i'd return the favor
Don't even go there you know you will lose.

i disagree...
I personally think the 996 is vastly superiour to the 993... hence why I bought one...
But each to their own, and if you can't take a joke, stop hijacking the 996 threads

Yep. Would agree, particulary about the suspension. Bushes / wishbones, shocks, track rod ends are typical at this age. Would be quite easy to drop 4k on all of this, plus discs etc if needed.

I would only worry about mileage on the following grounds:
1) No substantial history
2) Smoking
3) Poor compression test on cylinders
3) If its 3.4 996
Most of the air-cooled variants run for ever if they have been looked after, look how many are still surviving and run on a regular basis.
My personel preference is to buy on condition & history

The 996 v 993 debate
The GT2/GT3 or Turbo 996's......these are the only cars worth any substance if we are talking lasting high miles.
These in experts opinions are the only 996's worth comparing to a 993 or any other traditional 911 end of story.
proof you dont want a 993.
The owners have no sense of humour (or perspective)*
*and seemingly edit their posts if they suddenly feel very foolish - hence me having to edit my post to add this, seeing how after i quoted the above it was altered for whatever reason...

Oh....
Now I get it
I've got one of these new fangled Water-cooled sense of humour... while your still working with an old Air Cooled Sense of humour, which your convinced is superiour and much better constructed, hence your reluctance to even consider upgrading to a water-cooled version....
