Went to see a nice X50 TT today, but it doesn't have NAV. Is this still kiss of death on resale, or has lower price of portable devices made it less important?

The trade and therefore private buyers, will try and screw you at resale. I hold an alternative view that at some stage in the future people will prefer the cheaper to replace DIN slot radio than the expensive built in satnav system when these electronics go wrong.

There is also the issue that modern portable satnavs are in a different league functionwise.

DAZ
(deliberately ordered my car in 2002 without satnav, so I had empty DIN slots in the dash for various garage door laser radar and GPS related control panels).

Whilst it's always nice to buy a car with sat-nav, it's worth pointing out that systems that are on 5 year old cars now aren't much good. So it stands to reason that in five years time any system fitted on a car now will be old technology and worthless anyway.

This whole satnav thing amazes me.

Why pay a premium for an utterly out of date system when a £200 portable job is far superior. There's a chap I know who uses a Garmin in his Aston V8 becuase the nav is just shit.

If you want a TV in the dash, then get a Kenwood Double DIN system and save youself a couple of grand!!

Although I know the PCM2 is shit - i like the look of it in the dash and would be reluctant to buy one without

Is it safe to assume the car you looked at has the aerokit and lots of interior carbon? if so, its a stunning looking car with a huge amount spent on it but, like you say, no nav.

edited to add as an after thought, if i was looking for a pre 52 plate TT i would positively look for a car without nav as the pcm1 unit imho looks horrid

I have a PCM2 unit which works fine. I'm sure that certain aftermarket systems offer a more sophisticated solution in terms of functionality, but hey, I only use it for helping me get to a location. This, it does perfectly well.

I personally place a value on having a neat integrated solution. I drive past hundreds of mondeo/vectra/golf/focus etc etc that have a suctioned cupped screen stuck on top of the dash and I think it looks sh*t. I also could not be bothered to remove it every time I parked up or even have the motor broken into by someone looking for the unit in the glovebox or similar.

IMO no top end, primarily road use car should have a nasty aftermarket box stuck on the dash or windscreen, nor would I consider buying a modern expensive car without it. I seriously doubt I am alone in this sentiment. soapbox

I think you've hit the nail on the head chillerman. I'd be reluctant to get a 996TT without PCM.

I use a Tomtom910 from time to time - in terms of functionality, it knocks spots of previous COMAND and BMW Nav systems (even the DVD ones) I had integrated in previous cars, but its still a pain to get out, put away and have stuck to the windscreen. Even DIN mounted options don't always look well integrated, though are no doubt much more convenient than Tomtoms.

Is the PCM1 worse than the Mk1 CD COMAND in Mercs (from 1998)? Whilst Mk1 COMAND looked pretty klunky - the ones I had always did a good job of actually navigating, as long as I had the right discs for the country I was in. Having it integrated made it really good, even though there was no gimmicky 3d/etc. (e.g. instructions came up for nav under the speedo in my 03 SL500, and in a similar way the integrated phone book would scroll in a display under the rev counter, IIRC). Having said that I always found the TMC traffic you get std with prof BMW Navs excellent and worth having - does PCM1/2 have this?

(Having said all that a Tomtom would probably look OK, if a bit low down, in an early pre-996 911 if you found a way to neatly mount it permanently on top of the centre console under the dash - anyone tried this - photos?)

I fitted a pioneer unit to mine and looks good and works 10 times better than any other fitted system I have used

Can't really fault it - other than lack of NAV and a few stone chips. Comfort seats wouldn't suit everyone, but they're fine for me.

I am sorry but I would never let the decision about buying a £50k+ sports car come down to whether it had sat nav or not. There are many companies out there that can neatly retro fit a decent system for a very reasonable cost.

jdh1, whcih car did you look at? My old X50 is for sale at 911 Sport at that did not have sat nav.

My 2004 997 had PCM2 with dvd based european disc. The TMC did nothing until I got to Switzerland when it started talking to me. I enquired about it on my return to Blighty and was told its a £500 update which gives a new dvd map and the TMC will work in the UK. I didn't bother, obviously.

It does affect the value and therefore the price should reflect this.

I can kind of understand it with the 997 as the dash has a large LCD integrated as standard kit, and it seems a bit daft to have it there and it not to be able to do navigation. On the 996s though, the provision of a double DIN slot seems ripe for a superior and indeed cheaper aftermarket solution for anyone inclined to go for an integrated solution. [At the very least, this should avert some vermin spotting suction cup marks on the windscreen and smashing a window to see if you have left a TomTom in an unlocked glovebox].
