"SAM is the first-ever, self-service diagnostic kiosk that empowers drivers with vital information about their cars—instantly, affordably and on demand. For $15 and less than 10 minutes, you can drive up to any SAM location, 24/7 and get a comprehensive read-out on your car."

Don't OPCs charge around £200 for something similar?!

A poster on Rennlist developed an interface that you could make yourself with parts from Maplins and a soldering iron. I know a couple of guys on the PCGB forum made them. It allowed them to interface with the vehicle electronics using a PC.

I'm waiting for someone to make them in their shed and sell them. I can't be arsed buying all the bits and messing about with a soldering iron.

Incidentally the OP refers to a service that relates to US vehicles not necessarily ours. I believe there was some commonisation of protocols in the USA just so that you could use a universal tool to diagnose many / all vehicles. this doesn't apply in other markets. Perhaps someone who knows more could post and clarify this.
