I don't know the facts, but I have driven there on export plates on several occasions. Not a problem. Have seen many other cars enter with the same.
I have also been told by the marshals at the gate that the ban on "temporary" plates relates to dealer plates. They've got red characters on white background, starting "06..." or "07...". Have always seen cars with dealer plates get sent away.
well it does say on that official linked pdf that i posted, that cars on export plates are banned
maybe this wasn't always the case, and you could rely on the natural tendency of germans not to follow petty rules......
but say for example you had a set of what appeared to be uk plates fastened to your car, who would know?

If your car/plates are legally on the road in Germany then you will have no problem on a public session at the ring, after all it is classed as a road when open to tourists.
I got pulled after a 600 mile trip having a UK plate typed out as a German one (with the badges etc) luckily enough i had the normal plates in the bonnet. It could have been a wasted trip.
Regards,
Barry

Barry,
Dealer plates are legal in Germany, and are seen more frequently there than UK dealer plates are seen in Britain.
As you can tell from the photo of the gullwing, they're easy to spot, and they definitely will get you turned away at the barriers.

I can definitely vouch for that. Happened to me in a 911. Boooo. So I hopped in with a friend who artistically merged his car with the barriers less than two laps later. All in all, that was an eventful trip.

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy full insurance with these plates?
Yes, although it's not cheap.

Great guys, thanks for your help!

When I've asked for export plates, I have insisted on fully comprehensive insurance to go with them - over the duration of the plates, it can cost in my experience, from about 180-480 Euro depending on the car's value and so on. In instances where I've got my own plates organised, there has alays been a little insurance office next to/near the zulassungsamt where I could wander in and buy what I needed over the counter. If Porsche are taking care of this for you, they'll know what to do. You'll get the plates with 3rd party included - you just have to upgrade or ask Porsche to upgrade to the specification you need (ie comprehensive with xxx amount of excess etc).

Problem is, when I checked I could only get 3rd party included with the plates. Could anyone tell me who to contact to hopefully get full coverage?
Can you not talk to Porsche about this? I don't understand why there's no-one to help you. I have some numbers you can call, but until I know what it is you're doing, I'm not sure if they'll be relevant. But certainly on Monday I could put you in touch with someone that should be able to sort things out. Where are you collecting the car? Is it a new one? From an OPC?
