I bought my dream car just over 2 years ago and have loved every minute of owning it (other than paying the the bill for the engine rebuild I decided to have done!) I managed to find a coupe, in Gun metal grey, with black leather, all the history in place etc etc - I couldnt have been happier!

BUT, now living with my Mrs in Belgium, driving on the wrong side all the time, Im wondering if its time to consider parting with this amazing motor in favour of similar in LHD form... or god forbid something less 'inspiring'

Now, the plot thickens - as I need to generate some cash to buy a car capable of accomodating 3 nippers in the back (we have a baby on the way ) but really cant stand the thought of being without that fantastic sound of the flat 6 behind me for those weekend blasts and weekends away!

So, do I advertise mine and hope to find something as good in LHD format in the UK (potentially making the most of the price differential for LHD/RHD in the UK).

Or, do I look to 'downgrade' slightly to an SC, or an even older 911?

Or, do I look for every available excuse to hold on to my beautiful car?

I never thought I'd part with this car having realised an amazing dream - but reality bites and all that.

What to do?

Dom

Well as you have to get a car with 3 seats in the back anyway and you live in a LHD country get a LHD equivalent of your car and buy a 5 seater with the difference. THe hard bit will be to get the extra for your RHD car here over a LHD car.

Indeed!!!

Its looking like a 'scenic' for the family duties (big enough for all the people but small enough for the Mrs not to get too panicky about driving it), and with a little bit of research this weekend we're looking at having to spend around 10,000 euro (just under 7K) plus the Mrs VW Polo to get a new shape scenic 1.5 DCI (which seems quite a good car actually - especially when compared to a Picasso or Zafira).

Just looking through the PH classifieds there seems to be a few LHD 911's around at 7-8k mark too... but am I kidding myself that these cars are going to be as reliable and bullet proof as mine!

Dom - switch to LHD for sure, but take your time and find one as good as yours. LHD driving position is wonderful

As for the other bit, a Scenic? vomit

Have you not considered the Touran?

Hi VSW,

I love the idea of swapping to LHD, I drive the Mrs Polo (LHD) and didnt find the change a problem at all. I also love the idea of shopping for a new toy - it would at least ease the pain of parting with my current car - I hope...

I was really impressed with the scenic actually, especially when compared with a picasso - those things feel like a tin can in comparison to a very sturdy comfy feeling renault (and the showroom citroen even had uneven panels - unbelievable!!!). I havent had the chance to get up close to a Touran yet, this was one of the first options on our list of likes (the Mrs thinks they look a bit 'Vanny') but she does love her Polo so if its good Im sure she wouldnt take much convincing. The other potential stumbling block is finding one thats cheap enough as they havent been around long.

Dom, LHD pedals and steering in air cooled 911's are noticeably better - you know 3 of my 4 have been LHD right?

Don't want to name and shame, but the Scenic is okay as a new car or if someone else is paying for it. If you have to foot the depreciation and maintenance bill with your own money then i suggest you look elsewhere, and the current kings of that crop are the Touran and the C-Max...

Why not UPgrade to a 964 LHD as the prices are so dismal at the mo?

I would definitely sell your RHD over here and buy LHD over here though.

Are the 964's really going that cheap!? I didnt used to like the shape in comparison to the 3.2, but I have warmed to them a lot!

I was assuming I'd have to look at getting an older 3.2 (mine being 89), or an SC and also looking at Targa etc just to get the price down!

And yes, if it comes to it I will def be looking at selling mine and buying LHD in the UK to take advantage of the slightly lower value.
