About a year ago, I decided I was going to start looking for a porsche, you know how you always hanker after them as a kid (even as a 29 year old kid) and so strted looking into the models, prices etc.

I started off looking at 3.2s and SCs, but kind of liked the looks of the 964. Now the top end of the 3.2 market will see you in a reasonable 964 won't it... however if you push the 964 thing a bit, that'll get you into a 993, just... but then once you're looking at nearly 20k for a half reasonable 993, which is still only 8k above the original budget for an SC, you could feasibly get into a water cooled 996 with all the creature comforts and everyday-ness that goes with it.

Now, having settled, I thought, on a 996, I started to get a bit concerned about horror stories about failed engines, porous blocks etc, and decided that buying into the a*se end of the market was always a slightly risky choice with a car of that value, and that I should give the model time to work out the teething problems etc... Eventually I decided that the safest option of 996 would be a 3.6 facelifted one, running around £35k.

Okay, so lets say 35-40k so as not to be constrained too much in choice, and also just about open up the OPC option...

And then I read a thread called "nine nine seven" which tells me I can get into a 997 C2 for about 45k..... where will it end? Should i just bite the bullet and buy a carrera GT? Is this it for the rest of my life? Am I doomed to forever want faster and more expensive cars?

Sounds like a pretty cool life to me......

Think the only thing that stops people upgrading more often is the pain associated with finding a decent one... type

That's why so many people choose to buy new - and Porsche is the most successful car company in the world
