997 GT3 and RS noise levels
Discussion
I've been trying to understand if there will be any problems using my forthcoming RS (March build) at UK track days. Today I received this info from Porsche Cars GB at last and it is not good - they say the following:
Please note that the TUV homoligation data states that both the 911 GT3 and the 911 GT3 RS exhaust noise levels were tested and recorded at the following levels:
Drive by 75db (at 5,700 rpm)
Static 108db (at 5,700 rpm, measured at 45 degree angle from rear aperture and no closer than 0.5 metres from the tip of the exhaust pipe).
The following noise limits are enforced at these tracks:
Castle Combe . . . . . . . . . . 100db @ 75% redline revs @ 0.5m static test
Castle Combe Noisy Days . . 105db @ 75% redline revs @ 0.5m static test
Goodwood . . . . . . . . . . . . 105db @ 75% redline revs @ 0.5m static test
Oulton Park . . . . . . . . . . . 105db @ 75% redline revs @ 0.5m static test
Brands Hatch . . . . . . . . . . 105db @ 75% redline revs @ 0.5m static test
Snetterton . . . . . . . . . . . . 105db @ 75% redline revs @ 0.5m static test
Cadwell Park . . . . . . . . . . . 105db @ 75% redline revs @ 0.5m static test
Donnington Park . . . . . . . . . 92db drive by test @ 40m and 75% redline revs
Bedford Aerodrome . . . . . . . . 88.9db drive by test @ 40m and 75% redline revs
Silverstone . . . . . . . . . . . . Don’t seem to be too bothered.
If Porsche's figures are correct, the static test will not get you on track anywhere except Donnington, Bedford and Silverstone. It is also worth noting that 75% redline revs in an RS is 6300 rpm NOT the 5700 rpm that the Porsche tests were done at - so it will be harder still.
I know a few of you have been to Silverstone in 997 GT3 and RS, but have you tracked anywhere else with more rigorous noise limits, and if so did you get on track?
If this is going to be a problem for all 997 GT3 and RS owners does anyone have any solutions?
Does any one feel like taking their car (preferably an RS) to a track to be noise tested so we can all see the actual extent of the problem (I really hope there isn't one
)

) Off to Silverstone tomorrow and will ask around.
I have only booked silverstone, Spa, Donnington and Oulton Park for late in the year so far - I decided to steer well clear of goodwood ect for the time being and see how things pan out.

I find it hard to believe that Porsche would builda car such as the RS, which is purpose designed for race circits knowing that it would not be able to run most UK tracks. They aint stupid.
lol.
Im with Dan on this! Porsche probably don't care too much that the UK has ridiculously stringent noise levels compared with the rest of europe...

Did porsche test the car with the sport buttonon or off coz it makes a big difference to the noise.
I am pretty sure the tests were done with the sport button OFF.

I'm with both Steve and Dan. The response, when asked about this, from a Sales and Marketing guy at the factory (not sure who exactly it was - sorry) was 'It is not a problem at the Nordschleiffe - so why should it be a problem any where else.' Organised track days are a UK thing and the Germans only have about a tenth of the 'man track days per year' that are available in the UK. The track days they do have are mostly held at the 'Ring, Hochenheim and Spa (I know it's in Belgium
) where the noise limits are very high and not usually enforced anyway. My OPC has told me that there is only ONE global spec for the RS (except left or right hand drive) and that it would not be possible to for them to provide any modifications whatsoever to reduce the exhaust noise for the UK market. This would leave it up to the independant exhaust makers to do something possibly. Seems to me that 100 or so RS track compliant exhausts at, say, a grand a pop is worth a bit of development. Only thing is the warranty

At Silverstone tomorrow and 17th Fab...
Doing Bedford 17th March, so that will be the tester for me....
I read that Chris Harris got round there OK in a 997 GT3, but only with the sport
button 'off'

Glenn, Hope you have/had a good day at Silverstone. Down here (Bristol) it is a beautiful dry and sunny day - hope you get/got the same up there. Good luck at Bedford - by the time you go my car should be made and on it's way
