newbie cayman owner
Discussion
hi guys,
i currently drive a dodge viper GTS and have decided to get something a little more subtle for daily use while i keep the viper in storage for summer. Have never owned a porsche before so am looking forward to the experience
I chose a new Cayman/Cockster/Boxster with hard on whatever you want to call it lol.
Seen a few write ups and it seems to get a good review as a drivers car.
Has anyone driven the 2.7 and the 3.4S back to back? Was there much of a difference?
Cheers guys

another reason i went for the 2.7 is because all of the S versions appearing at my dealer just now seem to be tiptronic cars
I wanted a manual balsalt black car (original i know lol)and the next one coming through at the dealer was that spec with 19" carrera S wheels with black centres so i chose that one.
Any owners in the glasgow area?

Im only 24 so stretching to the 3.4S for an extra 5 odd grand or whatever it is for an extra half second to sixty just didnt seem like a wise decision to me .

Son, these are the kind of mistakes youth let's you get into. But don't worry, the next time you stand in front of such a decision, you know how to do the right thing though...

Yep, the regular Cayman lacks the necessary ooomph which the S delivers. Simple as that.
Welcom to the Porsche club.
Welcom to the Porsche club.
I guess that depends on your perspective of what 'oomph' is. Road & Track magazine went to Germany to try one with the 6 speed box and could only get it to 60mph in a sluggish 5.3 seconds. Their V-max was a miserable 160mph too. That's about the same as a 3.3l 930.
Of course it doesn't have the torque of the 3.4, but having to keep the engine in its >4000rpm sweet spot is part of the fun.
It handles better that its soft GT cousins too
SS7

lol, thanks for the welcome guys!! I guess ill have to live with the shame of owning a Cayman - lite! If i like it i plan to upgrade to a 911 in the summer anyways so the slight lack of performance wont hinder my enjoyment for long
a 911 before you're 25? - congratulations.....there were still only a wet dream for me at 24.

I test drove the Cayman S right after a 997 4S and was not dissapointed. R&T might have filled the tank with diesel...

Welcome! Im only 24 so stretching to the 3.4S for an extra 5 odd grand or whatever it is for an extra half second to sixty just didnt seem like a wise decision to me
That's quite a car for a 24 year old. I had a beaten up Supra when I was that age!
The 'S' is more than just the bigger engine, it has a 6 sp gearbox, bigger brakes, limited slip diff, better standard wheels, nicer seats, and "some other stuff" that I can't remember because I'm not that geeky!
Pikey
PS. I lied about the limited slip diff
is the 6 speed box much of an advantage? I wonder if the gear ratios are shorter on the 5 speed? Perhaps make it feel a bit punchier than a six speed?
Brakes arent really a big issue as the ones on my viper have no ABS so i consider the porsche standard brakes a bonus lol!!
I do a lot of milage as part of my job so i really chose the Cayman as a motorway smoker with a bit of twisty action thrown in when i have the time. Has anyone pitted a stock Cayman vs a Cayman S on the track? That would be interesting to see

Plus my viper pretty much takes care of any need for silly speed.

hmmm hmmmm isn't the new Boxster S a 3.4 now, so whats the upside of the Cayman over that - given your paying a premium for the coupe......the standard boxster chassis is more than capable of handling the bhp so not sure you really need the extra stiffness.
