the new carrera gt thingy is going to be called the GT1 apparently but some people on here where telling me its not going to happen.

search google images for porsche GT1 and youll find a few but they are artist impressions.

the older GT1's have been on the road, not sure if they where converted though, I remember seeing one for sale on www.carclassic.com a while back was road legal for germany anyways.

Certainly expecting too much from the likes of me.

I've seen silver (surprise, surprise) and white.
Don't know if any other colours were used.
As you probably know, the road version was just a pretext to homologate the race car.

For a period in the '90s proper sports car racing was totally ignored by the FIA (Max strikes again).
In its absence, three guys (Jurgen Barth, Patrick Peter and Stephane Ratel) created the "BPR" global sports car series (which morphed back into FIA GT in '97).
This series did not formally include Le Mans (which technically is run by an independent regulator, the ACO), but the intention was that the BPR cars would make up the core of the Le Mans grid, as is the case with FIA GT today. Therefore if you were doing sports car racing seriously, during this era you would run BPR and Le Mans. (Difference being that Le Mans allowed protoypes, whilst in the rest of the calendar BPR did not.)

The Porsche factory wanted to get back into the limelight of sports car racing, from which they had been pushed aside by Jaguar, Toyota, Peugeot and then McLaren.
Their idea was to develop a purpose-built racer and find a way to get it declared a "road car", so that it was eligible for the entire BPR series.
That was the basis of the GT1.

Supposedly there was considerable consternation amongst the B, P and R as to whether the Porsche GT1 was in the spirit of the series.
The rules were ultimately interpreted such that if a company built and offered for sale a production run of at least two (as in, one-plus-one-plus-nothing-else) road-legal cars, then the race version would be homologated.

One might say that this was a way of making the intention of the rule meaningless in order to favour a special interest.
Perhaps such an interpretation would be too cynical, but, then again, the "B" in BPR, Jurgen Barth, in addition to being one of the three guys who owned and ran the racing series, was at this same time an employee of...Porsche Motorsport.

As with anything else, if you drive too much, it can make the times that you do drive less special.

true, true, but in that case, how bout you let me take it for a spin then? scratchchin

you prob get a lot of thisboxedin

on a side note, while were on the topic of porsche super cars, how does a 959 compare to the likes of a 911 turbo or GT3? Its hard to appreciate the supercar performance and everyday useability from just reading about it.

Okay, dealers will offer at a price that is a bit above what they expect to get, but in this case the asking price is 50% too high. rofl

Just assumed it was a made-up price as they don't have the car.

Nice bit of publicity having a GT1 on your web-site.
