I've been with my 996 C4 for a couple of years now and it's quite simply the best car I've ever owned. When I bought it I spent a long time looking for the right one and since then have kept it 100% spot on with the intention of keeping it for 5-7 years and then trading up to a GT3.

However, about a year ago I started a new job and am spending more and more time working from home, with the result that I actually have to find time to drive it - and even then only at weekends. I'm not rich, so having a £30k car sat on the drive depreciating seems a bit extravagent and I've been pondering its sale. I couldn't be totally Porsche-less (this is my 3rd) so if I did sell it would have to be to get something that would still press all the right buttons but at much less money. On that basis I was thinking maybe a 986 CS, although I haven't actually driven one yet, which seem to be had for around £11k.

So, my questions to the learned fold are: if I sold the 911 would I regret it? And would the 968CS make a good replacement if it did go?

Thanks for the opinions...

968 CS are a very well balanced car i love them but you have to bear in mind they are alot older than your 911...so get it checked for everything and see what the out come is.

They are a fantastic drive but need some looking after.

You will be better off spending a little more and gaining alot in my opinion.

I had one in my rear view mirror for around 50 miles today..........NOW I WANT ONE. Stunning, apparently a great drive - a proper Porsche.

968's are less likely to break down on you than your 996 if some of the posts on here are anything to go by!

The main thing you'll miss is the noise... 968's dont saound very porsche...

and it wont be as quick as they only have 240BHP.

Have you considered a 964? some of these are about the same price as a 968 and you wont lose the 911 "feel"

I quite like the sound of 968's (and 944s2's) with those huge pistons

i'd imagine a CS to be a fair amount lighter than a Carrera 4 so would it really be that much slower?

I'm sure the 968 will be slower in a straight line. However I've never known anything but a GT3 or an RS be quicker through the corners. Look for one with refreshed suspension and brakes and the M030 anti-roll bars though as these will make a world of difference.

And whilst the water cooled 4 cylinder engine of a 968 may be lacking character relative to a flat-six, it's far from charmless. A sports exhaust helps that along though.

Sounds like the CS could be worth a serious look but I'm still apprehensive about selling the 911 as it took 6 months to find and is everything I looked for. I can't really justify a £30k piece of static art on the driveway though so maybe I'll get a few photos taken over the weekend and get an ad knocked together and see what happens. Can't believe I just said that cry

Not sure anyone's said this yet on this thread, but also consider the Sport. This was a UK only model and is just a slightly specced up Club Sport, with a few more electrics. They CS may be the one with the legendary reputation, but the Sport is the same car with about 20kgs more weight. If the buyer of the Club Sport ticked 4-5 different options boxes when speccing the car, they could have ended up with a car identical to the Sport.

And all cars sold in Europe were either Coupes or Club Sports, which is why there seem to be a relatively high percentage of CS's in LHD.
