Yes i have owned 964 before and yes i know the 993 is bullet proof but want a daily driver not a wend run and want a 996. I have read about the problems with the 996 engine and was wondering if the general opinion is that the 3.6 had the problems ironed out - or is it just that the 3.6 cars are not old enough yet to blow up! Or am i reading to much into the engine failures on the 3.4 (you hear the bad stories but not the ones that run for years without hassle). Yes i appreciate the 993 has everything but not everything for me!

i cant answer if the 3.6 is any better relaibility wise than the 3.4 but the only real problem they have is the RMS

there are a lot of net stories about oval pistons etc, but i am yet to speak to or hear of an individual who as encountered a 996 engine failure for anything other than over revving (read stupidity) ie trying to engage 2nd instead of 4th when downshifting from 6th

I have heard of the occasional failure of the bearings around the rear intermediate shaft which sounds something like this.... "wibble wibble wobble wobble chatter chatter chatter grrrrrr grrrrrr splurge putt putt putt" and then your engine expires all over the road... it's fairly terminal.

Do you know what's interesting? In some countries they use a comma instead of a decimal place. So we'd be talking about 3,4 and 3,6. Of course the Americans say Liter instead of Litre, so they'd say 3.4 Liter and 3.6 Liter.

Does that help?

Right, so that's that answered then! Thought if i said the 993 was everything to everyone might get some people with 996 experience! Not to bothered about RMS etc that's just life, its engine failure that worries my bank manager!!!!

One option might be to search through all the threads, then you may come to the conclusion it's internet hysteria.

If you're still concerned you can buy a Porsche warranty.

How many 3.4 996s were manufactured? How many engine failures have you heard of?

Right, now that's sorted:

What's faster, Lapis Blue or Guards Red?

Let's say for scientific purposes they've both got a Savannah interior.

right so a 3.4 will be fine unless unlucky, mass hysteria started to worry me thats all. I reckon red might be slower, its a low hiding colour so will require more paint to cover primer.
