Ok, so how about "Which model most defines a Porsche?"
Discussion
Hmm, this pre-supposes an answer to the question "what does Porsche mean to you?".
For me, Porsche is about speed, certainly. Engineering - yes. Innovation, build quality. Honesty I think as well - by which I mean an ability to be used every day, to start without fail, to convey me and my luggage across an rain slashed apennine or a misty alpine pass, arriving fuss free at my hotel. Try that in a 328GTS and see how far you get. Or a DB4 or XJ-S for that matter.
I think it's also relative to the age we live in. 50 years ago only a handful of cars could stay with a 356 on that alpine pass. (Jag XK120, Ferrari 340MM - but you may not arrive alive). In 1985 again, not much would trouble a 'cooking' 911 Carrera, let alone a 928S2 or 911 Turbo. But fast forward to 2006, where a Golf diesel(for christ's sake) will do 130mph without much fuss and it's a different story. The roads are too crowded, law enforcement too efficiently electronic, and modern cars too insulated from the road to make driving really fast all that pleasurable.
Porsche have made very few bad cars. One of my most memorable drives was in a 944S, the next best in the wet in a Boxster 2.5 Tiptronic of all things. So I'm going to have to hedge my bets and answer like this...
Which model most defines a Porsche?
Whichever one you've got the keys to.

You had me at "Hmm..."
You lost me at "...Tiptronic."
Great post, though.
My vote for most iconic Porsche would probably be the 930 Turbo. Edited by loach on Thursday 21st December 18:16

Whats the car that people look at and think Porsche.
Red 1988ish 3.2 Carrera with whale tale i think.
Not saying its the best but for whats instantly recognisable in terms of looks and image, i'd say its the 3.2
Ajit.

Tend to agree, anyone who knows nothing about 911's if asked will say "is that one of those really fast sports cars with the whale tails?"
so for me a 3.2/SC or a 930, all featured on the classic athena posters
The red carrera in front of my old man's car in traffic when I was about 12 years old....traffic started moving and I say 'wow that's fast dad'... 'he hasn't put his foot down yet son, you wait until the traffic clears'. 15 seconds later the rear squats down and it shoots off like I've never seen anything go before....
So after a little arithmetic.........the 911 3.0SC
