rattle on start up

Hi all

I have a 996 1998 with 88000 miles on the clock, has anyone ever had a slight rattle on start up from the engine bay. once the starter motor has disengaged and the car has started there is a rattle for about 2 seconds from the engine bay.
Also recently when i select R on the gear selector it seems to take several seconds before it goes into gear then it clonks into gear.....
Please help.

The rattle could be something as simple as the slack being taken up on your timing chains. No big deal if thats the case.I am assuming its ok when running?

May well be hydraulic tappets, as long as it disapears fairly smartly it shouldn't be an issue.

I heard this on a 1998 model I was thinking of buying. Put me right off, but on investigating afterwards have been told its quite normal. Something about the chain being tensioned. Read in a porsche buying guide that it was OK for them to sound like a can of nails for a few seconds.

Out of interest, has it only just started doing that - the impression I got was that "they all do that, sir" ?

Hi there I have a 98 996 and it does this when cold or hasnt been driven for a while perfectly normal chain tensioners. Dont let it worry you.

thanks all for your replys, i can relax a bit now. And yes it had just started to make that noise, i never purchased it with the rattle...............
I just need to sort the gear selector out now,
