Just been on the phone to Sutton Coldfield Porsche to arrange the cars service, 111 point check and warranty. She is due the 48k service in January.

Service - £531.
Spark plugs - £167.
Belts/filter - £25.
Brake fluid - £113.

So £836 all in. Bloody hell fire! How much for spark plugs? So I want to source my own but need a few pointers. What have others used and where did you buy them from?

Then asked how much if I supplied my own oil. Oh knock £130 off. That seems very expensive for 9l of oil, but result for me. They say go Mobil 1, but happy to take any advice from those who have experience of other oils.

Now for the good bit, the 111 point check is £200, but as they're servicing the car she will do it foc. Now that's more like it.

That's a lot of money for spark plugs. Maybe you should just use 4

She's good mate. Big grin every time I go out in her. Came off a roundabout this morning onto some dual carriageway and was hitting 90 before I knew it!

Now any idea on alternative oil and what about spark plugs?

I paid less than that for the full 48k service from a specialist, including oil and spark plugs.

Think yourself lucky, I recently had my 48k service done at porsche in newcastle and paid just short of £1100 in total for the same service as you (althought that included £25 for their own car hire and £50 to diagnose some paint discolouration on the bumper.

I know it could have been a lot worse. It was the £130 for oil and £170 for spark plugs that really shocked me.

i,ve just took mine in to opc newcastle today and took my own oil (mobile 1 as thats all i'd use and should be used) but i payed £7 a litre they wanted £silly+vat a litre, did the spark plugs my self took 3 hrs but cost less than £15 for the plugs and there the real deal also changed my air filter that cost £19 again the real deal with out there silly prices so the service is costing around £250 from them now not bad as they wanted just over £1000 (and they didnt bat an eye lid)

(got the plugs and oil from andrew page and the air filter from euro car parts)

it is hard to change the plugs as it's the bumper and intercoolers off along with a few other bit's and bob's but i like getting my hand's dirty once and a while and saved a lot of cash and the air filters just a 2 min job

lets put this in perspective boys just had my Discovery serviced I am a member of Land Rover Loyalty club that gives me 20% discount on servicing. Last bill for fourth year service, new pads and replace an oil contaminated hub grand total five pounds short of fourteen hundred pounds. So stop getting upset 'cos your uber turbo has cost a couple of hundred quid for a full engine rebuild.

Don't worry about it. They are sure to find some things wrong with it that require immediate attention. I predict you will come away having dropped about 1500 notes. Perhaps we could run some sort of sweep stake on it? Please report back and let us know what the final reaming comes to.

Merry Xmas

The 993 is twin spark so you buy lots of spark plugs (but not as many as if you have a V12 mercedes - 24 plugs eek!). Not sure about the 996? On the 993 they look like an absolutely massive nightmare to change, perhaps you should check it before you go doing it yourself!

If I take the car to the OPC I reckon if I get it back having spent less than a grand I'm doing well...but it usually isn't a vast amount more. Factor in £725 on a warranty (£900 now) and the contribution towards pads and discs (every three years for me at £1K) the car is kept maintained and warranted for around £2K a year.

That's OPC stamping the book...and a good independent for discs/pads/brake fluid etc.

Not bad at all, frankly. Our Chimaera costs half that again. Sure - the hourly rates are cheaper at TVR independents - but a whole lot more needs replacing! hehe And there's no warranty to maintain...

To put this into perspective we run our Vectra with no warranty and it costs less than £500 a year. Utter bargain. But not as nice to drive!

porsche must love PH.

they know all the moaning about crap build quality, dodgy engineering and sh1t service is not going to stop people buying a dream car. the fear of huge bills forces many to buy their warranty and keep servicing in their obscenely overpriced network. so you book your car into an OPC; who works on it? who borrows it to drive home? who torques the wheels up? and when exactly did buying a warranty become acceptable to us as a substitute to quality engineering? you'd have to put a gun to my head to get me into an OPC.
