I had a brief passenger ride in a 997TT which belongs to one of my brothers friends... Those of you in London might have seen it - a white one, with totally blacked out windows on Bahrain plates - doing the rounds in knightsbridge.
Anyway, the teenager that owned it had it delivered to RUF before it went to Bahrain (where he took delivery before air freighting it to London!!!). He told me they had managed to extract another 73 WHEEL hp (4wd cars = more drivetrain loss so probably 100bhp at engine?) purely from reprogramming and no hardware mods.
All I can say was that this tiptronic version was just about the fastest car I've ever been in. The gearbox was awesome but the mid range acceleration was interplanetary. The 500bhp modded 996TT that I drove literally 5 mins earlier for comparison was pedestrian. This felt quicker than everything, 996 GT2/F40/Ford GT etc.. The only car which felt as quick was an 800bhp Mitsu Evo thing someone took me out in.
For those of you who have the car and want some more... get that RUF upgrade. It's shocking and the 73bhp feels like a SHEDLOAD more.

And whose parents own oilfields. You missed that bit off your post and it's fairly relevant.

What's the crack with Bahrain plates in the UK? Is there some sort of immunity? It seems that there are a lot of high end vehicles in London running them...

Guessing it's to do with speeding points and or congestion charges?

Or do Bahrain not put VAT etc on cars? making them cheaper than here.

Actually you are not allowed to drive a foreign registered car for more than 3 months in the UK and that is the rule if it is from another EC country which Bahrein is clearly not. So if this car shows up on a couple of congestion charge cameras over more than a 3 months period the guy is in trouble (unless his parents bail him out)

Just out of interest, what does the law say about driving a vehicle with foreign plates in the UK as i have seen cars with foreign plateswith parking permits near where i live and i'm sure they have been there for at least a year

In my experience the Middle Eastern kids always have "diplomatic contacts" who seem to be able to magic paperwork from nowhere. Parking permits, insurance notes etc arent generally the worry of the person driving the car.

They pay people to do the boring stuff.

How would they find him? They'd have to actually stop him before he had to start getting clever like asking Tony to tell the police to leave him alone...

The driver is almost totally immune. The Police will have no info on registered owner, also how do they prove who was / is driving the car? The bloke driving may have no registered address or several in the UK. May ultimately have diplomatic links. Do you think Plod are going to bother? Far easier to go for Joe Bloggs and Yours Truly with UK registered cars and all traceable paperwork in place.

Worth posting on SP&L to hear how the BiBs would deal.

Its quite reassuring to know that some teenager is tearing round London in a superfast car that cant be traced to its owner or proven who was driving it. It will be real fun if he runs someone over.

I actually think that it is very difficult to follow up, however since the introduction of the Congestion Charge foreign registered cars leave a papertrail of their whereabouts so in case they get stopped there will be a seriuos fine and you might need all the dimplomatic connections in the world to get out of what.

I don't think there is any collaboration(?) between the police and transport for london so if you are stopped by the police they don't even know if you have paid your congestion charge or not. I suppose they can ask for records from tfl but probably too much hassle unless they guy was a suspected crime boss or something

PS Guy also owns a 430 Spider and a Murcielago and SLR. The Porsche and the big Benz are kept in London. You'd be surprised about how sensibly the guy drives (when he's not demo-ing it) - down to earth lad too.
Most illegal thing about the car was how tinted the FRONT WINDSCREEN was!!! Suppose they need to keep the cars cool in the desert.
