Thinking of getting out of 997s into amv8...???
Discussion
I had the pleasure 3 weeks ago of driving a AMV8 for 4 days
and 850 miles around Southern Ireland
I thought the car was brilliant around those roads - A Porsche
GT3/Turbo would not have had any sump left !
it was very comfortable and did a 4 hour stints with no trouble at all
Im 6foot 5 !
The best thing is the noise and you are contantly banging through the box
to hear that deep V8 noise
the down side was the way it was put together ! the Interior started falling to bits
but if you can put up with that and people talking about James Bond !!!
a different car than a GT3 - more similar to 996 Turbo !

Have a drive of an AMV8 -
I also not sure what the residuals are like in 2 -3 years
knowing the Aston its bound to fall more than the Porsche
I was on business/hols but showed my Mrs The " Ring of Kerry" !"!!
got from Bantry Bay to Dublin in 3 hours 5 mins ( including petrol stop )!
( as I said the Aston was quick ! )

Quick?Compared to a 996tt its like driving a Ford Capri!Tim,you have been cocooned in a Gt3 for too long..if you think an AMV8 could get remotely close to a 996tt on the road you should re-watch the top gear when a 997s pissed all over the m6 and amv8 around the Isle of Man..unless you think a 997s can stay with a996tt that is..?I also not sure what the residuals are like in 2 -3 years

I had the same dillemma as you a month or so back. I'd sold my 997 last year to get a 360 Modena, and was looking to get back into Porsche ownership but was sorely tempted by the lure of the V8 Vantage. I went for a test drive and was left with a feeling of being slightly disappointed. The clutch was very heavy and the gearchange a bit reluctant even when the gearbox oil had warmed up. The performance didn't feel startling and the car did not feel as nimble on the road as a 997. It had excellent torque and was able to trundle along at very low speeds in 6th gear quite happily but it just didn't feel that great a drive to me. The looks were seducing me but the handling kept putting me off. I found the general build quality to be fairly good but you can see that Aston is a low volume manufacturer in areas like welds under the bonnet which are more agricultural looking shall we say than you'll find on any 997. I was also surprised by some of the exposed wiring under there which wasn't tucked away inside waterproof ducting. I spoke to a dealer I know who had a V8 for sale alongside a C2S and asked him for his opinion on the relative merits of both cars. Bearing in mind he'd have made more money out of the V8 from me he recommended the 997 as it is easier to live with day to day. The Aston has a poor turning circle and is a pig to reverse due to the lack of rearward vision. The 997 is likely to be more reliable, is far cheaper to service under normal circumstances, will arguably hold it's value better in the long term and has the benefit of more usable room inside.
At the end of the day it's down to personal taste and what you want to use the car for. A 997S will happily pile the miles on and in relative terms will not cost a fortune to run in terms of the performance you are getting. The Aston will look far better outside your house, get you noticed wherever you go but probably not handle the miles quite so well in terms of durability. It will almost certainly cost more to maintain as well.
I ended up taking the C2S which has a factory sports exhaust and not regretted it for a second. It was the same age as the Aston (both less than 12 months old) had only 1500 miles more on the clock, has loads of extras yet cost me £16k less to buy. I'll be interested to compare the relatively value of the 2 cars in 12 months time and see which one has dropped the most.
Good luck with your choice.

AMV8 looks amazing, but is a little bit slower than the drama of the car's shape would have you believe. I think Prodive can get another 35 or 40 bhp out of one just by changing the cats, but you'd need to do something, because as-is - the AMV8 isn't as goos as a 997 - let alone a TT or GT3.

Not driven a amv8 but all the complaints you hear about it are that its slow compared to other cars in its class, sl55amg, 997s, M6, from what I can gather caymen s would give it a run for its money. I would add though, none compare in the looks department.

You should ask two well respected and learned gentlemen on here for a side by side opinion ...
Dazren 996TT X50 and Shadytree AMV8
I hooned around the southern Alps and Monaco with them on Megahoon and the 996TT was certainly not embarassing the Aston, and Daz doesn't hang around.
Stuart said that the V8 doesn't have the sheer grunt of the DB9 but the handling a sheer chuckability gives it the edge
Oh, and it sounds awesome from 20 metres back

Hi loach... its karl here from naas... no more gt2 im afraid... my brother looked at a amv8 last week... i think he is mad to change his 997s... he really wanta a gt3 now but cant get one... hows germany...???
Hey, dude - great to hear from you. Germany's freezing and I can't wait to get home. I heard/read about the GT2. At least Mr. Leonard is in one piece. I agree with you on the AMV8 - he'll get all the wimmin but he'll be late for all his dates. Just not quick enough, I think. As for the GT3 - I'll probably be able to get him one here quicker than the UK if he's bothered.

yea... im on sofa here with two broken legs... lesson to be learnt.. dont give your keys to a muppet driver... not sure about a germany dealer order time for rhd... might be worth checking alright..when u back....freezing over here too....
PM me with a number, and I'll get in touch when I get back and bring you a few grapes or something. Mind the legs.
Had an aston for 2 weeks, but it broke down after 5 days...
The sound was phenominal, there is no mistaking it. And the looks you get actually make it a joy to drive, as opposed to some of the looks in the porsche that just sort of make you want to hide
But all in, i cant wait to get my porsche back. Aston just lacked something. Didnt feel as solid on the road, didnt feel it had as much traction, and didnt feel fast enough...

No idea which is quicker but do know that Top gear is full of crap, entertainment only, TV
Trust me ..a 997s wont get close to 996tt..Unfortunately this is true: The TT does the ring in 07.52 and the 997S in 08.05 (with sports suspension and PCCB). That's quite a gap...
