Trying to post a link to the autotrader page but not had any luck. Anyway for those interested it's the black one with cream leather and RHD.

Here's the ad:

Manual, 165,000 miles, 964, Black, 4WD, 3600cc, G reg, cream leather, teardrop mirrors, 3rd brakelight, service history, part SS exhaust, ABS, Air con, A/Wheels, E/S/R, MOT May '07, Tax April '07, present owner has had car for 9 years and has not spared costs of repairs/etc. Mechanically very good and body in good condition for age. Handles like a dream. Cherished number plate not being sold with car. £8,950

Would the mileage be a concern and would it just be a money pit at that price? Would it still be usable as a daily runner or would I need a cheap banger on standby for the days when it doesn't work?

I would say that the price reflects the milage. When was the clutch done, has it has an engine rebuild how are discs, pads, wheels etc. There's no reason that it would be a money pit if it has had regular servicing and the big things have been done. The cars are very well built and can go for many miles.

Sounds a bit too good to be true, yes its high mileage, but frankly even if a top end rebuild and a clutch needed doing the week after collection at that price it still wouldn't be the end of the world, but a 964 at 9k I'd be a bit concerned.

If on the other hand it is an honest car the man must be mad to let it go for that little.

Sold mine for £9k and it was very sorted indeed and had 100k miles. Then I did sell it to family (reckon that cost me £3k)!

If he's afet 8950, try a poke for 8k, and factor in costs for full engine rebuild which will be in the region of 7k.

Only after a good PPI of course.

Then you could have a decent car for a few years...

Definitly get a PPI done.
An engine in need of a rebuild usually is pretty smokey and oil leakey.

Sounds very cheap to me almost half the price of a good one. Rmember there is no such thing as a cheap porsche.I would think the buyer is more than likley getting rid and cutting his losses. Worse still at £8995 its probally up at more than what he expects to get aswell.

Seems very cheap to me.
I know you can pick up some bargain 964's but this is the price of an SC, albeit soem SC's fetch more. I would doubt a 3.2 at this sort of money also, saying that you can pick up 964's less than 3.2's nowadays.
Get it checked if okay you've got a bargain as long as it needs nothing. You will not lose anything on it longterm.

Rebuild at £7k ?

When I had my 964, some 4 years ago, IIRC Parr were talking £3.5-4K ? As it happens they said I didn't need it done so I don't know exact cost. £7k sounds a bit strong, no?

besides which the only rebuilds they tend to need are top end anyway, bullet proof bottom end (unless abused). I would expect with a bit of shopping around could be done for 3K, substantially less if prepared to do some of the work yourself.

Same story with clutch, when I did mine (later found clutch was perfect and did not need doing grr) shopped around and found a few people who would do it for circa 1K, did it myself for less than half that.

I know of someone who paid £8k for a 964. He ended up paying nearly that amount again to try and sort it.

Even after costing him £15k in total, it wasn't to the same standard as a £15k car!

3-4k for a top end rebuild, 7k for a full rebuild,

Go look at it, get and inspection , see what has been done to it. The miles arent the issue you need to assess its condition. I don't think £9k is massively cheap anyway taking into account the milage. If it has 70-90 K miles I would expect it to sell for £14k ish at the most

It`s 330 miles from London, the car has been maintained on a no expense spared basis and yet the handbrake points to the sky as on a car that hasn`t been serviced properly for 3 or 4 years. How can that be ?

The car certainly isn`t expensive but we won`t be rushing up there in the morning to buy it.

As has already been said, there`s no such thing as a cheap Porsche unfortunately.

I managed to get hold of the seller this evening and the car is already sold so the problem's over!

I would consider buying a 964 in this price bracket so I'll keep looking.

Watch this space then for someone wanting to know how to fix a multitude of problems on the cheap, as his bargain has turned out not to be so!!

Just an update for those that may be interested,

In the end I've upped my budget to £10k with my first ever loan (apart from a mortgage)
I went to view and put a deposit on a 964 today. It's the realistic car of my dreams, a 1991 C4 manual coupe, in dark blue with dark blue leather, had a top-end rebuild 3 years ago, has the teardrop mirrors and upgraded Porsche 17" wheels.

The MR2 was sold thanks to the classifieds on here and goes tomorrow evening so will be getting the train to work for the next 3 days, will be very sad to see her go but it's time to upgrade.
