996 C4S or 997 C2S?
Discussion
Probably a SFQ but here's the dilemma. Looking for a new Porsche. Previously owned a 993 (awesome) and a Boxster S, (bland- only my opinion)!
Now considering getting back into the saddle. I like the look of both the 996C4S and the 997C2S. The interior of the 997 seems much better but come January when bargains should be around, there will still be approx £10-15K between the two.
As to driving, I've yet to drive either but any advice here would be appreciated. The 996 would be nice so I'd have £15K less debt weighing me down but bot sure if I'd be better saving the pennies for the later car.
Just looking for a weekend blast car and as I'm not a Premiership footballer this is a big decision for me. Thanks for any response.

Personally if it's something for a good blast and max fun I'd be going for the 2wd option, whether 996 or 997.
I had a 996 4S and it was a great car, but felt my previous C2 was the more fun drive.
However if you really need the increased all weather capability of 4 WD then I doubt you'll be disappointed with the 4S.
Your best bet IMO would be a 997 C2 (non S) with sports suspension - if you can find one !!

Hate to open up a can of worms but the 996TT is surely worth a look.
Thoroughbred higher league car, GT1 bottom end dry sump engine, available for similar money to more mortal 911s.
Or, if you don't need the rear seats, a GT3 (with same engineering in the engine bay as TT).
Cheers
Ajit.

My neighbour has a 996 C4S which I have driven a number of times and it is an excellent car. Compared to a 997S I think the most obvious difference is that the C4S rides a lot harder and the quality of the interior is not as good as the C2S. Perormance wise they are both pretty quick but the C2S feels sharper and a little better balanced. Unless you are planning some in trips in adverse conditions, I doubt you will often need or feel the benefit of 4 wheel drive as both are very sure footed.
I definietly preferred the C2S but the price difference is not trivial.

I have had both and the 997C2S is a much better car.
As previous posters have mentioned, you will rarely experience the "benefits" of the 4 wheel drive syste.
However, you will notice the better acceleration, ride, handling and interior of the newer car.
The C4S still looks ace though

stouffer - in a similar position to you I feel the 996 C4S seem v overpriced compared to 996TT and 997 - people are still asking £45k whereas an early 997 C2S can be had for £50k and facelift 996 TT ofr around the same.
where can you get a 2003 996TT for £50k? assume this is a high miler or dodgy colour or you are quoting trade offers?

If spending £50k on a recent 911, three cars stand out for me as good value. 2003/04 996GT3 Mk2, 2003 996TT or 2004 997C2S....For weekend blasts, as you state, then GT3 IMO.
