Hello Chaps,

Need a new set of tyres for my 1996 993 c4. have the standard cup wheels. Can anyone make any suggestions as to a good tyre. I do not take the car on the track and do not take it our in heavy rain however, i do occasionally get caught out as it is my only car.

Also, are there any forseeable benefits for me by changing the wheels to the turbo 18 inch variety and how much cost?

All I would say is not Pirelli Corsa Rossos - which is what I have and have not been impressed.

Bridgestone S02s and Continental ContiSport (have I got that name right?) seem well thought of.

Re. 18s the only real advantage is looks, they won't improve the ride.

Larger rolling radius = higher top speed, less accelleration

Larger wheels usually come with lower profile tyres though, which keeps the rolling radius virtually the same as the smaller wheel, but tyres don't absorb as much imperfections in the road surface, giving a more fidgety ride, plus the sidewall will be stiffer on the lower profile tyre.

Corsas or Rossos? They are two separate PZero tyres.

Yep, just what I was gonna say. AFAIK there's no such thing as the "Pirelli Corsa Rosso".

I tried Contisports, Bridgestone SO2's and Michelin Pilot Sports on my 993 Carrera 4 varioram. All tyres were N rated.
The Michelins were IMHO by far the best performing tyres both in termes of grip in dry and wet conditions and also wear.
You may pay a few bob more for Michelins but worth every penny.
Hope this helps.

Another vote for the Michelins. Good all rounder in the wet or dry. Nice and progressive as well as quiet.

You are quite right I meant PZero Rossos - it was very late ... for me.

Agree 100% - I'm running Pzero Rosso and they're rubbish

S-02 or Conti SportContacts all the way

I prefer the Continental SportContact2 N2's, followed by the Bridgestone S02/S02A (depending on what sizes you need and what you can get hold of) followed by the Michelins. The only reason i place the Mich's third is because they're SO NOISY. Pirellis are fie until you drive any of the above, then they seem distinctly third rate.

Have to say my 18's didn't do much damage to the ride and sharpened up the front end noticeably (lower profile and 225 instead of 205 so sharper turn in and less understeer).

Toyo's are a much overlooked choice and very good value for money. A little soft to last for ever maybe but worth it for the extra grip.

I prefer the conti's to bridgestones, but both are good, at the moment I'm a bit shocked I'm trying out some KUMHO's, and even though not N rated I'm very impressed, certainly a damn good winter tyre!

Just out of interest, I've been looking about and my old Fuchs are 16".

It seems that Continental don't now make Sport Contacts for 16" rims. Certainly that's the way it appears from their website. Are we all living off stock????

I'm on Continental ContiSportContacts (NOT sport contact 2 which I have heard wear much more quickly). I rate them very highly: quiet, good grip in wet and dry and above all, LIGHT! Got them for £130 fitted for 255/40 at Euro Tyres in Wembley by Jes, who did a fine job and looks after your alloys like they're his own.

A guy I know who does a lot of 'Ring driving swears by Falken FK451s which are abouts 2/3s of the price.

I wouldn't go to 18s if I were you. The ride will get worse.
