993tt tuning - the results
Discussion
I started a thread a while ago about tuning my 993tt and now I have some bits done I thought I'd report back, perhaps there are other 993tt owners out there who might benefit from my experience.
I learnt a lot from the guys on here who have done it all before and I realised the way to go about this is different from the 993 carerra's I'm used to.
After much research and listening carefully to advice from more than 1 guy who has spent over £40k tuning his 993tt I decided a custom remap is not the way to go on these complex engines (or rather their complex engine management systems).
I've only had the tt a few weeks and haven't really got used to the power of the standard engine so I didn't want to go mad - I just wanted to know it was quicker than standard, maybe similar to the factory 430bhp model.
And most importantly I didn't want to upset the incredible road holding and ability to get the power down.
In the end and after much head scratching and second thoughts I accepted ace_parts gracious offer and bought his rs-tuning ecu plus turbo s oil cooler. I also bought some cargraphic mufflers mainly for the sound but I've found they compliment the ecu anyway with slightly reduced back pressure.
I needn't have worried - the rs ecu is absolutely fantastic! I thought no one could better the porsche mapping as there are so many parameters to sort out other than simply the peak power. Now I understand the term 'power under the curve'! The first time the car was started after the ecu change there were no warning lights though the car was a little jerky in traffic - I was told to expect this and within 50 miles the ECU had 'learnt' the car and everything was as perfect as before.
Last night I had the first opportunity to test the power - wow! Just like Alan said it felt like the car had shed 200kg.. it now pulls nearly as hard in 6th as it did in 5th. And what impressed me most is how smooth it all is, smoother than the standard porsche mapping.... after the initial whack in the back the power just stays with you and doesn't tail off (relatively of course) like the standard car. The cars remains so unflustered it's just like the capacity has been increased, it's that clever. And then there's the extra boost feature when you flatten the throttle over 4000rpm!
So you can probably tell I'm quite happy. The message from me is - for the 993tt don't worry about off the shelf ecu's (as long as they're from rs-tuning or ruf anyway).
As for peak output I can't tell bhp as the massive torque is disguising everything but without the sports cats it should be atleast 430bhp and it feels like over 450lbs of torque in certain conditions.
So that's me happy now for ever..... definately....honestly, that's it.
Thanks again Alan, will give u a ring today to thank personally.

not sure about the ecu, have a word with tech9 Adam and check out: www.rs-tuning.de
I was fortunate enough to buy ecu second hand.
www.carnewal.com for turbo s oil cooler though you may decide it isn't necessary for uk.
cargraphics were about £800 from stuttgart connection.

I now there are R&D costs but £2500 for a reprogrammed chip?!?!? Porsche-factor indeed.
Porsche 450hp ECU costs 7000 Euros.
Porsche 408hp ECU costs about 1600 Euros.

Good point.
I would have payed £2500 for a new one if I'd known the results.... for the new power curve I think it represents excellent value for money. Driving the car I sense there's so much going on in that little silver box.... a 'proper' map is so much more important than in a NA 993, well that's how it feels anyway.

I had the 450hp powerkit fitted that INCLUDED the ECU. Total cost of the kit including 2 brand new K24 turbos, 'S' oil cooler and OEM quad ex tips was substantially less than buying the ECU on it's own - even more
.... also have the originl parts to possibly sell reducing the price even further
I also got my original 408hp ECU remapped by a specialist in Germany that puts out 500lb and 500hp (with the new K24s obviously)

I thought the whole 450 kit was about €5-6K from Gert?
Oops, just saw your subsequent posts...

That's right and that's where I bought it from. Even got a nice further discount from him

Glad the results were good - but I don'[t understand your logic. A custom remap not suitable for 'these complexities of the 993TT', yet you buy an off the shelf ECU?? AN odd conclusion to draw, but glad you got the result you wanted.
Odd conclusion John? - not from my point of view:

sounds more like it - £1600 for a £20 chip part!?!? unless I am badly missing something the value is in the code which is not exactly expensive to load to a chip

you're absolutely right. and rs-tuning and ruf retain the proper 'motronic' style mappings whereas a rolling road remap with a laptop doesn't. please don't ask me more about that - I only pretend to understand some of the gargon from Martyn, Alan, Simon et al.
Kenny, FYI this ecu (i had it before Alan) put 448bhp out of my 993tt with Techart 100 cell cats and Techart sports exhausts but no other modifications. That was on a dyno dynamics rolling road which is said to be fair rather than conservative or optimistic.
The overboost facility you mentioned also gave me near-as-dammit 500lb/ft at 4300rpm
Have you noticed how much harder it pulls after 5800rpm than the standard map, and the slightly higher rev limiter?

ECU profile sounds just like my remapped one (but I have the bigger lunged K24s)
