I'd be more tempted by a really nice 993. I remember talking to a specialist about which he thought was best and he reckoned that the 993 was bombproof. I've heard some nasty things about 996 engines going pop a lot. Plus I think the 993 looks like a proper 911. Oh, and you've only got to look at the way the 996 prices have dropped through the floor.
Just my 2ps worth.

Yep .. What the men say .
Go drive both , then at least you'll knowyou made the right decision to buy the 996
Honestly? .. If it's not going to be garaged , buy the newest car you can afford ..If you're doing low mileage , and the car is going to sit for a week at a time , you'll need to condition the 993's battery .. Not really an out of doors job. The 996 has 'sleep modes 'on the remote locking that cut in after about 5 days which saves the battery.

I agree too, drive both.
But, actually, if you're 25 and don't own a garage I think you should forego the Porsche and invest your cash in a better house. Then get a Porsche when you're in your 40's.
(If I had to, then so should he, bloody kids nowadays, don't know they're born, expect everything on a plate, blah, blah, blah)

A good 993 is definitely more covetable IMO, but a 996 is probably a more easily justifiable decision than a 10 year old car for 30k. Nothing new from me, I'm afraid - I also think you'll have to try them both to see what floats your boat. I'd prefer a good 993, but would probably rue my decision from time to time.
Tasty 996 pics make me go - 'Nice' or 'Lovely'. Tasty 993 pics make me get all goosepimply.

If you were asking me as a dealer which one I would pay for and choose for my own use - it would be a 996 for 3 reasons - (1) because I am getting to old to race around and like the 5 speed tiptronic (having got used to braking with my left foot) and it is a bit more comfortable, (2) I can repair the engine anyway whatever failure it has - here in our workshops for comparatively little money (just a lot of my time) and (3) I will have bought it at the right price in the first place.
If however I wanted to drive like I did when I was younger - or wanted a classic and had to take future depreciation into account and was unlikely to be able to find £5K to pay for an unexpected repair out of the blue or could not afford huge depreciation - then without doubt it would be a 993 manual (but not tiptronic as the 4 speed fitted just isn't quite responsive enough for me).

but if you must do otherwise go for the 996
