Auto Motor und Sport is still an utterly crap show (utterly crap magazine as well), though. Lovely film work there, and sensational driving. But the show itself is desperately old school, and is usually about as entertaining as flicking a lightswitch on and off. Boring and detatched voiceovers, crummy music, and the odd "Dear viewers...", this show and a lot of German shows like it are a real throwback to the forties and fifties. In between segments, they have a guy holding a big microphone FFS.
Tim Schrick and his crowd are having a decent stab at making a car-related show that's worth watching. There's a clip of Tim chucking a silver 997GT3 around somewhere.
Auto Vision I think the show's called, though the show that is really going for Der Top Gear effect is D-Max Motor and has Sabine 'I'm effing fast - OK?!?' Schmidt in it.

I love the German auto programmes. They have no bullshit and talk about the cars and nothing else - which is why I want to watch a car program.
Top Gear and the other garbage in the UK contain a tiny amount of content about the actual cars themselves. They're a bit like going to a cheap tourist restaurant in the middle of a city that has pictures of the dishes they serve followed by a crap Spanish guitarist who gets upset when you tell him to shove off when he pesters you for money.
German auto shows all the way IMO.

Superb bit of video.
But just imagine if they had that exact item on Top Gear (in English obviously and provided of course that it ever comes back on!) - that would get the show taken straight off air again.
In our new nanny state UK the uproar would be ridiculous; "motoring maniacs endangering life on public roads!" I can see the Daily Mail headlines as if they were written in front of me.
Still, nice to see that someone, somewhere can demonstrate this fantastic car as it is meant to be used. Can't wait for their review of the RS!

Well - personally, I'd rather be told what food tastes like than just be given a comprehensive list of the ingredients. The car magazines here are the same, insofar as in group tests, equal or similar weighting is given to practical and economic issues resulting in a very empirical sort of evaluation. Like I said, D-Max have something on the go which is worthwhile, and Auto Vision is worth a look when it's on. The rest of it is pretty much dead and unimaginative. I love cars, and I like a factual show - but I've nothing against being entertained, and anyone with a serious motoring bent is going to getting all or most of their study material in print anyway.
