My brother who has lived in Stuttgart for over 20 yrs, tells me the talk in the Auto community in Stuttgart is that the new 911 will have a Mid Engine layout like the Carrera GT super car and use many of its components (to get a better return on the development costs of the Carrera GT.?} More use of carbon in the build. No camshafts valves operated by solenoids to get massive reduction in emissions and up the BHP in one go? (E.U.C. new laws on emissions may make a number of engines obsolete?}

I have read nothing in the motoring press here. However he has a very good friend in Porsche development dept, and he drives a GT3 as do most of his friends so we tend to
take him serious.

Look out for a new type of Engine using solinoids in a V.W. first…
you heard it on PHs first not Top Gear or Auto Ex ????????
This is a Powerful Community this PHs if used correctly.

Very intesting facts..i read about the solenoid technology few months back, think it was in evo mag, don't quote me on that. The problem was the amount of electrical power needed to operate the system was very high. Also, respect comments from your friends but it's hard to imagine something that would use a lot if carbon fibre and still be in the £60k price bracket. If it goes mid-engine,it would also mean change of shape, losing rear seats possibly and definitely won't be a real 911. Can Porsche afford to,even if it drives a much better? time will tell..maybe the cayman will really be too much then to fit in the range. The current layout can accomodate a 4.0 litre max apparently,so the 998 will most likely be the last one as we know it. Funny that, coz the 999 does sound strange, maybe that's when they'll go for the radical rethink?time will tell.

Carbon fibre is a serious building material used in F1, I think you may be confused with Glass Fibre, carbon fibre is grade A building material for a Automobile..

Remember the 911's USP is it's 2+2 configuration.

That's what's helped to keep it so desirable, and what the other junior supercars have struggled to match.

Porsche are about to put a saloon in to production which would fill that gap? However I agree with your comments, The 911 is a unique vehicle in a many ways and it’s hard to imagine how it could be replaced,

I remember people saying the same about the original V.W Beatle many years ago and now we have a new Beatle back by demand. Clever man that Dr F Porsche

Yep, I'd struggle to find a reason to buy anything that wasn't a 2+2.

Aparts from Nerv's GT3.

Nah, ive had four in my car before, that said i wouldnt suggest transatlantic voyages fully loaded - someone would herniate themselves. Its every bit the 2 + 2 though, thats always been a 911 trait.

No, you can definitely fit two large petrolheads (one very tall and from Essex) in the back of a 930. They seemed to like it.. Interestingly enough you can also fit someone in the front boot of a boxster, but their (or your) visibility is limited.

I'm just in from the school run .. Three kids ages 4 5 and 6 (and me) .. with buckets to spare .. And of course there's the added entertainment of putting school bags where the normally engine is..

... I think you're been just a likle bit sensationalist TH ..

The 996/997 models are legitimate 4-seaters, with very useful rear accomodation. Earlier models not quite so good.

Cabriolets are more compromised because seating is different, although headroom is better with the roof down.

There are a lot of people who have been able to justify a 911, because it will take the family, where a strict 2-seater would be out of the question.

You can have a souped up rep-mobile like an M3 or RS4, or an F360, Gallardo, AMV8 etc, but no one has yet matched the 911's clever layout.

Not so clever but a Ferrari Mondial Convertible manages to be both mid engined, 4 seats and convertible with boot space. Ok, so it looks ugly but I can't think of another car thats managed to achieve this.

I'm a fan of the 911 but compared to all the other cars Porsche have made I'd say the 911 is the least clever of the lot. Sure people want 2 plus 2's invariably these people also want space for their clubs. Different markets, different cars.

The whole how long can Porsche continue with a rear engine layout has been discussed at length on here, with the general consensus being 'not forever'. Especially when they're deliberately making cars with lower capacity engines to retain the superior 911 brand and status. It all seems ludicrous to continue simply for the sake of tradition.

The rear engine will go as the air cooling went and it will have its detractors and critics but also it will have a new generation of supporters.

Time to totally reinvent the 911 and using the Carrera GT as a base sounds delish to me.

if i were a betting man i would more likely put my money on an 8 cylinder rear engined 911 than making it mid engined.Modern packaging tech ala vw W12 make this more posible I think.

How on earth does a mid engined 2+2 layout work? It would have to be a very odd proportioned beast...

4 seats ahead of the engine?
2 seats in front, 2 seats behind?!
The engine down the middle of the two rear seats?
The engine dropped down under the seats?

I was in Geneva talking to the techie chaps on the Porsche VIP stand drinking
free champagne at the Motorshow in 2005 and one of the senior chaps did hint that
they might be droping a V8 in the 911...can't wait.

ok sorry,i said baby instead of young children. Anybody over the size of a hobbit in Lord of the Rings would be extremely uncomfortable unless of course there was a hobbit driving and another in the passenger seat then the hobbits in the back may have more legroom.........
